Obituary

Gary Lee Goudy, age 78, of Artesian, South Dakota, passed away at Avera Heart Hospital on Friday, January 19, 2024, surrounded by his family.

Gary shared the last 21 years of his life with his wife, Patti, in their home in Artesian and, before that, Mitchell. He drove school bus for Sanborn Central School District for school as well as events and was also transportation supervisor. Prior to that, he drove the transit bus for City of Mitchell.

Gary was born to Ed and Gertrude (Watznauer) Goudy on July 23, 1945. He attended school in Artesian and graduated in 1963. He then went to Sioux City and went to barber school. Gary and his first wife had 5 children, all boys, who were the light of Gary’s life. He added 2 more bonus kids when he married Patti in 2002. Several grandkids joined his life in the years following. Gary held various jobs throughout the years, including driving truck for Coca-Cola, but he enjoyed driving school bus and even did so in his retirement.

Gary’s hobbies varied from watching youth sports, monitoring the weather, feeding the various critters in his yard, fishing and hunting, playing pinochle with the boys, watching the Dallas Cowboys, and enjoying a good nap in his favorite chair.

Grateful for having shared his life is his wife of 21 years, Patti; 6 sons: Grant (Bubba) Goudy (Natalie), Caleb (CK) Goudy (Allissa), Clay Goudy (Darcy), Ryan Goudy, Tyson Goudy (Anna), Matthew Hubbard (Julie); 1 daughter: Amanda Anderson (Craig); 10 grandchildren: Ross Roling, Mayson McDugle, Tanner Preheim, Keaton Preheim; Trevor Anderson, Trent Anderson; Greyson Goudy, Tydus Goudy, Maddox Goudy, Harper Goudy; 4 great-grandchildren: Laken Roling, Laine Roling, Baby Boy McDugle, Baby Boy Preheim; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, friends and acquaintances.

Gary is preceded in death by his parents, baby brother in infancy, sister Donna, sister Bette, brother-in-law Arvin, brother-in-law John.

Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Wednesday, January 24, at Bittner Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-7:00 PM at Bittner Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Brisbine Cemetery in rural Artesian at a later date. Honorary pallbearers are Gary’s 5 sons Bub, CK, Clay, Ryan & Tyson, step-son Matthew, and son-in-law Jim.

Condolences may be sent to 312 S. Main St., Artesian, SD 57314.

I am sure he would laugh at my terrible spelling mistake. But it would not let me. Correct it.

Sorry for your loss. I locked up to Gary when my father, his Uncle Wes would let me spend many weeks in the summers in the early 60's on their farm. Gary would let me tag along with him to do chores. He would also let me ride his beloved horse Apache. I cherish those childhood memories.Thank you Gary.
