Obituary

Imy Natvig Haase, 94, of Mitchell, SD, was called to her heavenly father Monday, March 4, 2024, at Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Saturday, March 9, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mitchell with visitation one hour prior to the funeral service. A private family burial will be in Kimball Cemetery in Kimball, SD. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Imogene (Leheska) Natvig Haase was born March 9, 1929, on the family farm south of Chamberlain, SD to John and Sophia (Pipal) Leheska. Imy was the youngest of four children.

Imy received her elementary education at the Wagner rural school south of Chamberlain, then graduated from Chamberlain High School in 1946. She attended Black Hills Teachers College in Spearfish and taught school in rural Brule County for 6 years.

Imy was united in marriage to Donald D. Natvig of Kimball on February 5, 1950, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Ola, SD. They made their home in Kimball for 57 years, being very involved with their church and the community. Don died April 19, 2007.

Imy worked at Northwestern Public Service for 22 years, retiring in 1991.

She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church Women. She served on the church council, taught Sunday School, and held local, conference and Synod positions within the women’s organization of the church. She was a long-time member of the Fellows of Augustana College.

In 2008, Imy was united in marriage to Rev. Martin Haase of Mitchell, where they made their home. Imy continued her lifelong devotion to her Lord and joined Trinity Lutheran where she continued her life of service. Imy was also a member of the Round Table Club and the Yesteryear Antique Club.

Imy was a wonderful hostess and always welcomed anyone into her home. She loved her pizza and wine nights with friends and always had cookies in the cookie jar. Imy loved to travel and was willing to take on any adventure. Her smile and laugh lit up the room.

Imy is survived by her family, Eric Haase of Sioux Falls, Beth (Hamilton) Mundy of Gainesville, FL, and Deanna (John) Bennett of Mitchell; grandsons, Alex Bennett (Megan Hazelrigg), Zach Bennett (Madison Mahlmeister), and Nicholas Bennett; great-grandchildren, Mac Bennett and Mazie Bennett; and many very special nieces and nephews, especially Sue (Leheska) and Greg Mairose.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Sophia Pipal; in-laws, CC and Olga Natvig; husband, Don; brother, John Alden (Loraine) Leheska; and sisters, Bernice (Ben) Nemanic and Vera (Kenneth) Brchan.

I will dearly miss Imy's presence and sweet smile at Round Table Club. She was a precious soul and one of the people I want to be like when I grow up. Praying God's peace and comfort during this time of grief.

Wow, my husband saw the obit on Imy & brought it to my attention. I knew immediately that this was the gal my Mother was friends with years ago. They apparently met either when my Mom went to business school in Mitchell or when my Mom worked in Mitchell years ago. I remember visiting her & Don in Kimball when I was a young girl. My Mother always told me I was named Imogene "Imy"after her. My sympathy to her Family & Friends.

I so enjoyed Imy and Don when I was an interim pastor in Kimball. They were so welcoming. She made an awesome strawberry pie. She was and remains a beloved child of God.

Many fond memories of Imy and that wonderful laugh and smile!
Don and Imy lived in the neighborhood in Kimball, and I use
to go and play with her nieces and nephews!
She was always patient with our noise!
Blessed be her memory,
Donna (Folan) Picek
