Nikki Porter

June 29, 1954 - June 9, 2018

On June 9th, 2018, the life of the kind and beautiful soul of Nikki Porter ended at age 63. She passed away at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD after a brief but life changing diagnosis of Ovarian Cancer.

She was at peace knowing she was ready to meet her God and be set free from pain. She left behind a legacy that will never be forgotten and her death will not be in vain. Nikki was an angel among us and now she is an angel watching over us.

She was born June 29th, 1954 in Sioux Falls, SD to Dwane and Margie (Wax) Dirkson. Nikki was a caregiver and always knew she wanted to be a nurse. She began volunteering as a Candy Striper at Sioux Valley Hospital as a young teen. She graduated from Sioux Falls Washington High School in 1972 and went on to attend the University of South Dakota’s Nursing program. She moved to Mitchell in 1975 and began working as a nurse at Methodist Hospital. Jim and Nikki were married in February 1977 at Zion Lutheran Church.

Over the years she continued her education by receiving her Bachelors of Nursing degree from South Dakota State University in 1987 and became a Certified Nurse Practitioner in Women’s Health in 1995. She worked as the Director of Mitchell Women’s Health Center and then as a Certified Nurse Practitioner at Dakota Women’s Clinic until 2009. In 2010 she joined the family business at Porter Distributing. During the 90’s she and Jim were also Owners/Operators of JCW Clothing Company in Mitchell and Sioux Falls.

It was important for her to give back to the community she raised her family in. Over the years she was a board member of or volunteer for many organizations including St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Mitchell YWCA, Abbott House, Mitchell Safe House, Mitchell Main Street and Beyond, Beta Sigma Phi, Mitchell Exchange Club, South Dakota State Nursing Board and more.

One of her biggest joys in life was being a mom and grandma. Her kids and grandkids meant the world to her. She loved to plan holidays, family dinners, projects and crafts with the grandkids, and vacations to make sure we all made time to make memories together. There was a never a moment we doubted how lucky we were to have her as our family rock.

Grateful for sharing in her life are her husband, Jim. Her mother, Margie Dirkson. Daughters, Christina Luna (Mark) and Kirbie (Eric Wilson) and son, Drew (Trena). Her brother, Guy (Kathy) and sister, Gaylene Guimond (Joe). Her eight grandchildren Aislinn, Ryann, Stori, Cael, Cruz, Denton, Declynn & Brooks. She was preceded in death by her father Dwane Dirkson.

We know Nikki touched so many in the Mitchell community. The family has planned a private prayer service. To celebrate her life, we invite you to share your memories and laughter with Nikki’s family and friends at the Lake House on Saturday, June 23, from 12:30 to 3:00 PM.
