Ruth Bartel, 89, of Baxter, MN, formerly of Cherokee, IA and Emery, SD died Wednesday, September 12, 2018 at the Northern Lakes Assisted Living in Baxter.
Funeral services will be 10:30 am Tuesday, September 18 at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Emery, SD. Burial will be in the Emery Community Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7-9:00 pm Monday at the Hettinger-Bittner Funeral Chapel in Emery.
Ruth Arlene Bartel was born April 8, 1929 on a farm near Alexandria, SD to Floyd and Inez (Anderson) Peck. She attended country school in Beulah Township and Alexandria High School. On January 21, 1950 she married Leonard Bartel. They farmed for ten years near Alexandria and then moved to Bristol, SD in 1960 where they purchased a grocery store. In January of 1962 they lost their business and home in a fire, so they returned to Alexandria and shortly after purchased a grocery store in Emery. They operated Bartels Market until selling it in 1990. Leonard died in February 1994. Ruth moved to Cherokee, IA in 1996 and then to Baxter, MN in June 2016. She was an active member of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Emery and Memorial Presbyterian Church in Cherokee. Ruth’s family was very important to her and was the center of her life.
She is survived by her three sons: Clyde Bartel of Alta, IA, Dale (Linda) Bartel of Brainerd, MN and John (Dawn) Bartel of Lake Havasu City, AZ, seven grandchildren: Marc Bartel, Susanne (Mike) Conrad, Charles (Amy) Bartel, Jared (Annette) Bartel, Autumn (Brad) Shobe, Trevor and Hayley Bartel, ten great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard, daughter-in-law, Karen Bartel, sister, Violet Overgaard, brothers-in-law: Norbert and Harvey Bartel, Elmer Overgaard and sister-in-law, Marilyn Bartel.
