Obituary

Arlene Miller, 93, of Mitchell, SD, died Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at Firesteel Healthcare Community in Mitchell.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, May 18 at Mitchell Wesleyan Church. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 PM Friday, May 17 at the church with a time of sharing at 6:30 PM. Services are under the direction of Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Arlene Miller was born to Harry and Mary Knox of Alpena, SD. She attended grade and high school with siblings Albert, Ivan and Marilyn and numerous cousins. Upon graduation she entered the Methodist School of Nursing program. After completing that program she enlisted in a training incentive program in the Army's Nurses Corps during World War II. She served six months in New Orleans, LA. Along the way she was introduced to a handsome young man, Gilbert Miller, from Mt. Vernon. They were married December 21, 1945 in New Orleans shortly before he left for his army assignment. Arlene continued as a Cadet Nurse until returning to the Mt. Vernon area where she and Gilbert farmed and started a family.

Arlene did some private duty nursing, was an office nurse for a short time, and then she was sent back to work in 1954 when there had been a drought and poor crops. The plan was to work until a few bills were paid off. She said the plan must not have worked because she worked until 1990. She worked various positions and shifts as her young family grew.

She served on various hospital boards and chaired the project to put a permanent School of Nursing exhibit in the Friends of the Middle Border Museum in Mitchell. She was a member of the First Wesleyan Church serving on church boards and committees. She was also a member of the Mt. Vernon Legion Auxiliary.

Arlene was a master of many skills: sewing, upholstery, knitting, gardening, baking, cooking, and interior decorating. She wore many hats and could make those too!

A busy schedule didn't keep her from attending school programs and activities. Sunday school and church were always top priorities.

In more recent years she slowed down a bit and took on new hobbies of word searches and Sudoku, which she loved and was very good at. She would always say she should be doing something useful. We told her she was keeping her mind sharp.

She was very organized, resilient, a fighter and tough to the end. She demonstrated what honesty, dignity and hard work were about.

Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gilbert; a son, Greg; and brothers, Ivan and Albert. She is survived by a sister, Marilyn; her daughters, Ingrid Lindberg, Mary Miller, and son David (Marilyn) Miiller; five "Grands" and six "Greats"; many nieces and nephews; and her "family" at Countryside Living.

Memorials can be directed to the Dakota Lions Eye Bank and the Gideons, Int.
