Obituary

Ellsworth Junior DeLancey, "Bud", died peacefully, Jan. 19, 2019, at his daughter's home in Portland, OR.

Bud was born February 25, 1923, in Woonsocket, SD, and grew up in Mitchell, SD. He most recently resided at Countryside Living in Mitchell. He is preceded in death by his wife Phyllis Dewey DeLancey, daughter Mary DeLancey Bledsoe, his parents Ellsworth and Caroline DeLancey, brothers Russell, Orville, and Robert DeLancey, and sisters Marguerite DeLancey Sundquist and Wilma DeLancey Schlimgen.

Following graduation from Mitchell High School, Bud heard the call for duty and joined the military in 1942 at the age of 18. He served in the Eighth Air Force, an attachment to Patton's Third Army and the 702nd Heavy Bombardment. He was stationed in England and worked as a munitions officer, disposing of unexploded ordinance as well as loading and unloading bombs that were placed on the B24 aircraft that were flown over Germany. Upon leaving the military and returning to Mitchell, he discovered that his room had been rented to Phyllis Dewey, who he instantly fell in love with and married shortly thereafter. He was known to loudly say throughout his married life, "The best investment I ever made was the $2.00 marriage license I bought!" as it enabled him to get back into his bedroom, start a family, and to enjoy a 71-year marriage. Bud bought the first Harley Davidson motorcycle to be delivered in South Dakota after the war, and he and Phyllis rode it to Seattle. There Bud started a 35-year career with Kenworth Truck Company in both Seattle and Kansas City, MO, where he retired as a field service engineer.

They had four children, Michael DeLancey, Mary DeLancey Bledsoe, Donna DeLancey Boyd, and Thomas DeLancey. They have eight grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.
