Rev John Werner, 76, Emery, SD died Wednesday, May 22 2019 at the Freeman Medical Center in Freeman, SD.
Funeral services will be 10:30 am Friday, May 31 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church at Clayton rural Emery. Burial will be in the Flat Top Cemetery at Kadoka, SD. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 pm with a prayer service at 7:00 pm Thursday at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. Arrangements are with the Hettinger-Bittner Funeral Chapel in Emery.
Rev. John Theodore Philip Werner was born on November 23,1942 at Kadoka, South Dakota, to R.J. and Dorothy (nee Kurth) Werner. He grew up on a ranch near Kadoka. He graduated from St. John's Academy, Winfield, KS in 1961 and from St. John's Junior College, also of Winfield in 1963. When his father died in 1963, he spent a year helping out at home. He graduated from Concordia Senior College, Fort Wayne, Indiana, in 1966.
On June 1, 1966, he married Martha F. Nyman of Cherry Valley, Illinois. This union was blessed with two children: a son, Warren in 1969 and a daughter, Rebecca in 1972.
In 1970, Pastor Werner graduated from Concordia Theological Seminary, Springfield, Illinois. He served his vicarage at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Minot, North Dakota. Following graduation, he worked at the Dakota Boys' Ranch for two and a half years. He has served parishes in Farmers Retreat, Indiana (1972-75), Wall and Creighton, South Dakota, (1975-1990), Groton, South Dakota (1990-1994) and Emery-Clayton (1994-2010). In 2008 he had major surgery to remove cancer from his left hip. He also lived with Parkinson's Disease.
During his pastoral ministry, Pastor Werner served at various times as LWML Zone Counselor, LLL Zone Counselor, Circuit Counselor in Indiana and South Dakota, a member of the District Parish Education Task Force, and a delegate to the Synodical conventions in 1975 and 1979. He also served as a Pastoral counselor for the SD District LWML.
He is survived by his wife, Martha, his son, Warren of Seward, NE, and his daughter, Rebecca (Grant Schinto) of LaVergne, TN, his sister Adele of Lovington NM (Emil John Sip) and two nephews: Dan Sip (Stacy) of Sioux Falls, and David Sip (Rachel) of Oregon and two grandnephews: Ethan Sip, SF and Steven Sip of Oregon.
