Elaine Heiter, 92, of Bridgewater, SD, died Monday, July 12, 2021 at Diamond Care Center in Bridgewater. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Monday, July 19, at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Emery. Burial will be at St. Martin’s Catholic Cemetery in Emery. Visitation will be from 1-3:00 PM Sunday, July 18, at St. Martin’s Catholic Church. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Elaine Heiter was born July 19, 1928 to John and Sophie (Marken) Gossel in Bridgewater, SD. She graduated from Bridgewater High School.

On May 21, 1951, Elaine was married to Vernon Heiter in Emery, SD. They were blessed with five children Ralph, Barbara Ann, Vernon Jr., Linda, and Ronald.   

Elaine and Vernon worked as custodians at Emery High School. She also worked at the school in Kaylor and Diamond Care in Bridgewater.

Elaine was survived by her children Ralph Heiter and Linda Bassett both of Emery, SD; daughter-in-law Tami Heiter of Freeman, SD; three grandchildren, Cody Bassett, Adrien (Kellie) Heiter, Laura (fiancé Russell Covey) Reynolds; four great-grandchildren, Asher, Austin, Skyler, and Kayleigh; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Elaine was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon; sons, Ronald and Vernon Jr.; daughter, Barbara Ann; parents, John and Sophie Gossel; brothers, Herb (Francis & Adeline) Gossel and Lester (Ella) Gossel; sister, Betty (Dick) Shaheen; parents-in-law, Joe and Ida Heiter; and brother-in-law, Bill (Norma) Heiter.

+J.M.J.+ I was saddened to hear of the passing of +Elaine. May her Soul rest in peace. I offered Mass for her Soul. May Jesus, Mary and Joseph comfort the Heiters and all who mourn the departure of +Elaine from this life.

I worked at the school every summer and sometimes thrue the school year
Elaine was always a smile great to be around
Always went the extra mile to get anything done
Friendly to all
Love to visit she was a great person
She valued and showed kindness and love for all
She will be missed and remembered

I was glad to call Elaine as a friend. She was kind, thoughtful and a happy person. A real joy to be with. We enjoyed many good talks. She will be remembered as a great lady.

Aunt Elaine was one of the sweetest people I’ve ever known. Her wedding day was on my birthday so we had a connection. She is for sure one of God’s Angels in Heaven.
