Obituary

Keith Smith, 70, of Sioux Falls formerly of Mitchell, SD, died Monday, September 6, 2021 at Prairie Creek Memory Care in Sioux Falls, SD. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 PM Friday, September 10, at Bittner Funeral Chapel. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Keith Alan Smith was born on July 25, 1951 in Colby, Kansas. He graduated high school in Plankinton SD, in 1969. After high school, Keith attended the University of South Dakota at Springfield. It was there that he met his wife, Carol VanNatta. They were united in marriage on December 27, 1970 at the Congregational Church in Parkston, SD. Keith enlisted in the Army National Guard in February of 1971 and served for 6 years. Keith and Carol settled in Mitchell where he was employed at LifeQuest, retiring in February of 2015 marking 40 years of employment there.

Keith had several hobbies including farming for his parents on their farm east of Plankinton, woodworking, spoiling his dogs, and going for an occasional ride in his Corvette. He was known for his love of cookies, pies, and ice cream. He was very particular about his craftmanship and seemed to take it personally when a good piece of wood was painted or not installed with precision. His patience, sense of humor, and calm demeanor will be greatly missed.

Keith is survived by his son, Scott (Lori) Smith; daughter, Kelly (Jonathan) Lemig; grandchildren, Taylor Thurman, Alison and Elizabeth Lemig, Stacy (Travis Kleinsasser) Schoefelder, and Carly (Joey) Muntefering; great-grandchild, August Muntefering; brothers, James Smith and Johnny (Sheila) Smith; and his beloved Golden retriever, Biscuit.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol, and brothers, David and William.

I knew Keith from LifeQuest, but also from our love of golden retrievers. We boarded Keith and Carol's dogs many times at our kennel. So sorry to hear of Keith's passing.
