Shirley Robertson, 83, of Mitchell, SD, died Sunday, September 12, 2021 at Avera Brady Health and Rehab in Mitchell. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Thursday, September 16, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral service at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.
Shirley M. (Kurtenbach) Robertson was born in Ethan, SD on July 7, 1938 to Adolph and Elizabeth (Weber) Kurtenbach. She graduated from Ethan High School, and moved to Mitchell, SD where she lived her entire adult life. After graduation, she was employed at the Armour Plant for several years.
In 1957, Shirley married James L. Robertson, and became a homemaker raising their children. After raising her own children, she performed babysitting for grandchildren and great-nephews. Shirley enjoyed crafts and following/attending her children’s and grandchildren’s activities that included first communions, confirmations, wrestling matches, volleyball matches, football games, basketball games, softball games, baseball games, track meets, etc. She was extremely proud of all of her children’s and grandchildren’s accomplishments, and especially proud of being the grandparent of grandchildren that played on six state championship football teams!
Shirley is survived by her three children: Julie (Jim) Thue of Mitchell, SD; Ronda Turgeon of Pierre, SD; and Jim (Cathy) Robertson of Canistota, SD; five grandchildren: Cody (Laura) Turgeon; Chelsea (Daniel) Jensen; Alex (Colleen) Robertson; Macy Robertson; and Isiah Robertson; one great-grandchild: Aspen Robertson; sister, Kathy (Arnie) Suhr; sisters-in-law: De Kurtenbach and Nancy Kurtenbach; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James; parents; five sisters: Carol Jean Kurtenbach; Dorothy Otto and husband Charles; Dolores Cross and husband Frank; Annabelle Barnes and husband Robert; and Isabella Grohmann and husband Arnold; two brothers: Clarence “C.R.” Kurtenbach and Edward “Eddie” Kurtenbach; sisters-in-law: Bette Ames and husband Jerry; Clarice Lehew and husband Bud; brothers-in-law: John Robertson and wife Billie; Lyle Robertson and wife Maxine.
