Robert Anthony Determan

September 29, 1939 - May 2, 2014

Robert Determan, 74, died Friday, May 2, 2014 from lung and bone cancer and congestive heart failure at his farm home under hospice care.

The previous week he had many dear friends and family visit him at his home. There were old and previously untold stories, memories shared, laughs and love. It was the best going away party a person could have wished for. He appreciated and enjoyed every hug, handshake and laugh.

Robert Anthony Determan was born September 29, 1939 to Bernard and Anna (Bueltel) Determan at Sterling, CO. They moved just west of Emery, SD in 1941. Bob grew up there and graduated from Emery High School in 1957. On October 30, 1959, he married Cecilia Edzards. He enjoyed farming southwest of Emery for his entire married life.

He was a Boy Scout. He served in the SD National Guard for several years. He loved to watch the plow turn the soil over and to smell the fresh earth.  He loved sports, playing for EHS and then “town team” baseball and basketball for many years.  He also umpired and refereed many games, ignoring the conflict of interest that comes when all your nephews are on the teams playing.  His coaching idol, Don Wiblemo, told him, “Call ‘em close.  Make ‘em earn it.”.

He loved to watch his favorite team, the St. Louis Cardinals, (especially when his nephew, David Kath gave “Uncle Bob” choice tickets behind home plate and just behind their dugout).  Bob loved to sit on the Missouri River bank and fish for walleyes.  “Even if we don’t catch any fish, it’s just nice sitting here.” was a comment often heard by his fishing buddies.  He was a tireless card player, who never shied from a game of pinochle or euchre and laughed as much in losing as in winning. His last gift was his corneas. He was a big man and his heart was even bigger.

He is survived by his wife, “Cella,” his son, Gordon and wife, Kay, their children:  Megan, Cody, Kierra, Tasha, and Shaina, his son, Steven and wife, Diane, their children: Tyler, Ryan and Krista, his daughter Kori Wallace, her children: Scott and Lyndsey and his son Kevin.  Also surviving are his siblings Virgil Determan, Maxine Schleich, Irene Determan and Norma Letcher, his sister-in-law Helen Hildenberg, several dear nephews and nieces and young friend, Mitch Krueger.

Preceding him in death were his parents, brother, Cletus Determan, sister, Ruth Kath, brothers-in-law: Victor Kath, Merrill Schleich and Lyle Letcher, and sister-in-law, Delpha Determan.

Cella and Family: Sorry to hear of your loss. Bob was a friend and I always looked forward to seeing him and you when I was back there. The last time I saw Bob was at Kayser's Bar on the Emery Celebration. I had a chance to catch up with him and always enjoyed our chats. I also had an opportunity to work for Bob on your farm and enjoyed your cooking and great humor. He will be missed. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers.
