Wesley Jacob Johnson

January 10, 1930 - July 16, 2014

Wesley Jacob Johnson was born January 10, 1930 on the family homestead at rural Mount Vernon to Jacob and Josie (Johnson) Johnson.  He attended Victor School.  He was baptized on June 30, 1930 and confirmed on April 9, 1944 at Victor Lutheran Church at rural Mount Vernon of which he was a lifetime member.  He was also a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon.  On March 29th, 1953 he married Donna Mae Sowl.  They farmed in Davison County until retiring in 2007.  He was the treasurer of Blendon Township, on the Cemetery Board for Victor Lutheran Church, and served on the Board of Directors for Farmers Union Coop.  He enjoyed camping and was a member of the Good Sam’s Club.  He loved his water gun fights with everyone and was also an avid motorcycle rider on his Gold Wing.

We could always find our dad with his hearty laugh.  He always enjoyed going to the Johnson Family Reunions – family was very important to him.  A day never went by that the Johnson family didn’t have popcorn.  Dad saw to that.  Mom and Dad were great Mount Vernon basketball fans.  Wesley was very strong in his faith. They bought the house in Mount Vernon in October 2011.  His failing health brought him and mom to Avera Brady Health and Rehab Center.

He is survived by his loving wife, Donna of 61 years; their children:  Deb (Todd) Hofer, Neenah WI, Doug (Janice) Johnson, Mitchell, Renee (Jeff) Schievelbein, Sioux Falls, VaLynda (Bill) Summers, Sayner WI; sibling:  Verna (Arlan) Feistner, Mitchell; grandchildren:  Angie (Bill) Hanselman, Neenah WI, Chris Hofer and special friend, Katie Lyon, Fort Collins CO, Adam (Nicole) Johnson, Stillwater MN, Sarah (Travis) Hostler, Mount Vernon, Mark (Mikayla) Johnson, Sioux Falls, Mindy (Todd) Wixon, Brookings, Jordan Schievelbein, Sioux Falls, Matthew Schievelbein, Sioux Falls; great-grandchildren:  Payton, Chase, Alyssa, Izak, Karter, Oliver and Harlow.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters:  Evelyn Merkle, Yvonne Gates, Eunice Lachnit and Darlene Pence.

O my goodness, I can hardly believe Wes is gone. He was always so friendly to my mom & dad, went on lots of camping and motorcycle rides. They were great friends! We will miss Wes and his great smile and fun loving laugh. May God grant you and the family his peace and rest in His everlasting arms. See you in Heaven.

So sorry. I have fond memories of Wesley and his ready laugh and upbeat attitude. Us kids in the neighborhood were so lucky to have such wonderful fathers we could emulate and admire. My thoughts and prayers to y'all.

I will never forget your dad's wonderful and unique laugh. It makes me smile even now. During my childhood I spent many a day/night at my bff's (Renee) house hearing that laugh. We send our deepest sympathies and pray for peace and comfort for all the family in these sad times. In the Name and love of Yeshua, Mark and Patti
