Herman Phillip Semmler

January 2, 1930 - July 18, 2014

Herman Philip Semmler was born January 2, 1930 at rural Delmont SD, the son of Reinhold and Emma (Lindeman) Semmler.  He was baptized as an infant in the Emanuel Lutheran Church north of Delmont.  He learned the catechism for confirmation in German and then in English and was confirmed in March 1945 by Reverend Pietz.  He grew up and attended grade school seven miles north of Delmont.

He married Florence Mehlhaff on February 9, 1951 at Tripp SD.  They farmed in the Mount Vernon SD area until 1976 when they moved to an acreage south of Mitchell and just recently moved to an apartment in Mitchell.

Besides farming Herman was employed by Commercial Asphalt Construction Company for many years and then was employed for Davison County Highway Department from 1980 until 1993.  He was a member of the Mitchell Wesleyan Church serving as usher and President of the Faith and Fellowship group for many years.  Also in earlier years he served as a 4-H leader for twenty years and taught Sunday school.  The Semmler family reunions were very special to him and he kept them organized for fifty-five years.

His pride and joy was his time spent with horses.  Also holding on to the German language was important to him as he spent time with relatives and friends.  He enjoyed music and singing hymns, both in English and German and was even singing in his closing days at the hospital with his family.

Herman is survived by his wife, Florence of sixty-three years; four children:  James (Pamela) Semmler, Rapid City SD, Ronald, Martin SD, Darrel (Flora) Semmler, Mitchell SD and Karla (A.J. Jacobsma) Dickey, Monticello MN; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Arlington Semmler, Bloomfield CT and a sister, Annetta Heckenlaible, Mitchell SD.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers:  Edwin, Eltor, Helmuth, Harold and Richard.

Herman will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Florence and Family: we are sorry to hear of your loss. Your husband and father was a good man who cared about other people. He had a sense of humor and let it be seen quite readily. I remember working together with Herman on several church projects. I will miss his music provided through the German language. May God give each of you rest and peace during these days of sorrow.
