Lawrence Henry Helling was born on October 5, 1920 on a farm in Aurora County to Ole and Emma (Ryberg) Helling.
He was educated in rural schools and Hopper Consolidated School.
He farmed with his father until going into the Navy with service overseas in the South Pacific. He married Hilda Wegehaupt at Zion Lutheran Church in Mitchell on October 12, 1947. They farmed in the Ethan area, near Alexandria, then southeast of Mount Vernon until their retirement into Mitchell in 1983. He was a lifetime member of the Lutheran Church and served as an Elder and Trustee. He was also a member of the Mount Vernon American Legion.
He is survived by five children: Mark Helling and wife, Donna, of Watertown, SD; Steve Helling and wife, Mary Kay of Brookings, SD; Jim Helling and wife, Cindy, of Mount Vernon, SD; Connie Bush and husband, John, of Mitchell, SD; Tim Helling and wife, Colleen, of Mount Vernon, SD; 12 grandchildren: Nathan (Lisa) Helling; Kimberly (Jeff) Fahey; Heidi (Nick) Barr; Andrew, Jacob, Alexander Helling; Katie (Matt) Nebelsick; Joshua Helling; Sarah Helling; Jason (Jackie) Helling; Justin (Ashley) Bush; Kelsey Bush and 6 great grandchildren: Caleb, Eva, Brylie, Mark, Natalie, Ainsley; a brother Rev. Melbourne (Dorothy) Helling and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Hilda in 2004, and four sisters: Gladys Knochenmus, Blanche Kloxin, Louella Homan and Pearl Sudrla.
