Vernold “Vern” Hafner was born November 19, 1925 to Henry and Anna (Hauff) Hafner at Clayton, SD. He grew up and attended school in rural Norris, SD. He served overseas in the occupation forces of Japan with the 3186th Signal Service Battalion for one year. After his discharge from the U.S. Army, he farmed with his dad and later tested cattle for the State of South Dakota. He then worked for Berg’s Appliance & Cutrate Plumbing in Mitchell for many years as an appliance serviceman.
He is survived by seven nieces and two nephews: Glennis (Debra) Stern, Beverly (Carl) Buenning, Larry (Donna) Stern, Lynette (Doug) Auch, Judy (Richard) Kayser, Peggy (Norwin) Bittner, Evonne (Richard) Gerlach, Patty (Stephen) Schmida, Sandy (Dan) Graff; and special friends Sylvia Lee and Bill and Wes Morgan.
Vern was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters: Elvera Stern, Sunieva Heinert and Phylona Klein; two nieces, Karen Cheeseman and Cynthia Stern.
