Kenneth Edward Baldwin Sr

December 28, 1925 - December 2, 2014

Kenneth Edward Baldwin Sr. was born 12-28-25 to Jess and Kathryn (Kopfmann) Baldwin in Alexandria, SD.  He attended schools around the Mitchell area.  While attending Mount Vernon High School, he played football and was chosen Homecoming King.  Ken met the love of his life, Gladys Ann Uphoff, and married her April 8, 1944, at Luverne, Minnesota. They continued to be soul mates the next 70 years. They would often tell their family that they loved each other more every day.

Ken started his career in the US Navy in February 1945, where he trained as a Dental Assistant on the West Coast.  He continued to use his skills by lining up his children every 6 months and checking their teeth.   When he completed his Navy duty, he worked in Mitchell for Test Dairy for a short time and then George A. Hormel & Company for 25 years.  Later, Gladys and he opened up their own business, Baldwin Realty, which they operated for over 20 years.  After retiring from selling real estate, he continued with Baldwin Rentals and took pride in the restoration of 28 older homes.

Ken was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Kiwanis International and Mitchell Kiwanis, lifetime member of the NRA, Charter member of NRA Golden Eagles, American Legion, and sponsor of Mitchell Men’s, Women's, and Youth Softball. In 1983 Ken was named South Dakota Realtor of the Year. He was an avid deer and pheasant hunter. Ken won many awards and trophies in shooting competitions in the tri-state area.  Ken also enjoyed attending the grandchildren's events.

Ken will be deeply missed by his wife, Gladys of Mitchell; daughters: Gloria Hensley (William) of Harrisburg, Carole Locke (Tom) of Kansas City, MO, Connie Parrish (Michael) of Mitchell, Kathleen Budahl (Mark) of Mitchell and son, Kenneth E. Ken was a great mentor to me as he taught me how to wash and then fill milk bottles in my Dad's (Irwin Test) dairy business. I enjoyed working with him very much.

Gladys, on behalf of my sister Joanne (Test) Shaw and brother Doug Test please accept our condolences from the Test family.

Gladys & family, I was sad to hear of Ken's passing. Gloria had updated me on how he was doing, so glad we have reconnected. My mom said Ken was the first person to come to her house when my dad was having some problems and Ken was so wonderful to speak at Dad's memorial with such kind words. So sorry for your loss but happy for you to have had such a wonderful life with him.

I had the opportunity to work with Ken at Hormel's in Mitchell. Ken got me involved with the Credit Union movement in Mitchell and on the State level. Ken was always looking out for the younger generation and was a great tutor to me. My condolences to Gladys and the family. I am a better person because of Ken! Rest in Peace Ken!

My condolences to the Baldwin family. Ken was such a great guy, sold us our first and second homes in Mitchell. He always had a nice word when we would meet. He will be missed. My prayers to Gladys and the family.

Mitchell has lost one of its most caring citizens. Ken Sr. has worked and campaigned for what was the best for the youth of Mitchell. That legacy will live forever. To Gladys and children we have lost a caring neighbor, God's speed, Ken. You and your families will be inour prayers.
