JoAnn Barns


June 21, 1927 - December 12, 2014



JoAnn Barns was born June 21, 1927 at Sioux City, IA to Paul and Fern (Mills) Adams.  She graduated from Washington High School in Sioux Falls and the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in 1947. On June 10, 1949 she married William “Bill” Barns.  She was employed by the Delaney Clinic and St. Joseph Hospital.  In the early 60’s she quit working to raise her two daughters.  In 1974 she returned to work as a nurse for the Mitchell School District.  Jo had a true love for children and her pride and joy were her grandchildren, Billy and Katie.   She was a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).  She also was an avid bridge player, loved reading and working crossword puzzles.

She is survived by two daughters: Susan (Paul) Kiepke, Mitchell and Lori (Larry) Barns-Sheets, El Cajon,  CA;  two grandchildren: Billy Carnes, Sioux Falls; Katie Papendick, Spearfish; two step-grandchildren, five great step grandchildren, one brother, Jim Adams, Kerrville,Tx, and sister-in-law, Shirley Barns, Mitchell, four nephews and two nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, parents, Paul and Fern Adams.

To Susan, Lori, and family-Was so sorry to hear of your Moms passing. We had such great times working together many years ago at Jr. High. She will be misssed. Please know you are all in our thoughts and prayers.

So sorry to hear of your loss. I remember that warm smile and how she loved to visit. She will be missed by many. My deepest sympathy are with you as a family as you knew her the best.
