Bernard Blase Niehus was born February 3, 1927 near Geddes on the farm of his parents, Andrew and Anna (Eilers) Niehus. He attended St. Ann’s Parochial School and Geddes High School. He farmed with his father for several years. On June 20, 1951 he married Betty Jeane Wolfe at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Kimball. They farmed in the Geddes and Kimball area for 20 years and Bernard also worked on the Kimball Railroad. In 1971 they moved from the farm to Kimball where he was the Kimball School custodian and received the South Dakota Custodian of the Year Award in 1983. After retirement in 1991 he also worked at the Brule County Courthouse and the Plankinton School as a custodian. In 2005 they moved to Mitchell. Bernard was a quiet, prayerful man who enjoyed being surrounded by his family. He was an avid fan of his children and grandchildren, and enjoyed following all of their activities. He was a member of St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, Holy Family Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by the love of his life and wife of almost 64 years, Betty Niehus, his five children: Tom (Bev) Niehus, Kansas City, MO; Susan (Dean) Suelflow, White Lake; Sandy (Craig) Nightingale, White Lake; Dan (Renee) Niehus, Mitchell and JoAnn (Travis) Hohrman, Mitchell; 17 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, two sisters: Noreen Bridges, Geddes; Mary Ann Florey, Lake Andes; five sisters-in-law: Millie Niehus, Armour; Vi Niehus, and Maxine Niehus, McMinnville, OR; Shirley Hildebrand, Mitchell and Rose Ann Wolfe, Plankinton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers: Ralph, Bob, Louis, Joe and Vern and two sisters: Betty Minahan and Georgean Pesicka.
