Garnett Irene (Hiles) Smith was born December 15, 1922 in Bonilla, SD to Louis and Anna Marie Hiles. When she was a young girl the family moved to Missouri Valley, Iowa where she attended school. In 1944, the family moved back to South Dakota. Garnett worked as a secretary for Rozum Motor Company in Mitchell. Garnett decided to move to Washington DC to further her education and explore other opportunities. She then moved to Monterey, California and worked for an Aviation Company Walker Aircraft. She also lived in Oakland and Walnut Creek California. She received a wonderful opportunity as an Executive Secretary for Chevron Oil Company where she worked until her retirement in 1991. Garnett retired from the company after more than 30 years. In November 2002 her family finally convinced her to move back to South Dakota for which we were very thankful for.
Garnett had a love for painting, gardening, traveling, theater, music, sewing and much more. She was very talented in everything she particiated in. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, especially the babies and children. She had a deep love for her animals Tiffany, Esprit and Pompsies. She was always the first one there when anyone ever needed anything. Her beautiful loving presence will be missed dearly.
