Raymond Alfred Prien


October 15, 1932 - August 16, 2015



Raymond Alfred Prien was born October 15, 1932 to Gustav and Minnie (Blume) Prien near rural Dimock. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church near Dimock.  As a child he moved near Plankinton for several years and then moved with his family to his parent’s farm near Stickney. He graduated from the 8th grade in 1948 from Bohr Country School in Truro Township. He married Eleanor Justra on April 6, 1961 in Letcher. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2011. They lived on the family farm near Stickney until 1996 when they moved into Stickney.

He served many capacities as a member of the Moose Lodge, held a position on the Aurora County Weed Board for twenty-five years and was still actively serving at the time of his death. He took great pride in his family farming operation and raising his family. He loved spending time with his family and attending the events of his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his brother, Elmer, Crossville, TN; sister, Mabel Schmit, Winner, SD; five children: Linda (Jr) Assmus, Plankinton, Kelvin (Bonny) Prien, Stickney, Ronnie (Darla) Prien, Stickney, Kim (Jason) Wallman, Wessington, Fred (Michelle) Prien, Mitchell;  fourteen grandchildren: Angela (Jordan) Feenstra, Eric Assmus, Daniel (Heidi) Prien, Aaron Assmus, Barbara (Aaron) Wright, Traci (Craig) Namken, Shelby Assmus, Joel Prien, Kara Prien, Charles Prien, Tanner Wallman, Avarie Prien, Brylee Wallman and Brystal Wallman; four great-grandchildren: Ashtyn and Gage Feenstra, Tatum Wright and Nash Prien and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many very good friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Eleanor in 2011, three brothers: Frederick, Norman, Walter; four sisters:  Esther Simpson, Agnes Prien, Marie Crater, Bertha Crater, his father and mother-in-law, Charles & Albina (Swobada) Justra and four brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law.

I thoroughly enjoyed accidentally meeting Ray at the restaurant in Stickney a few years ago during a Bohr family reunion. We both enjoyed sharing our knowledge of the history of my grandfather's former farm. Ray obviously loved the land. May he rest in peace.

Jerauld Co Weed Supervisor... I had the pleasure of spending time with Ray at the State and District Weed meetings, it was always good to see him and visit. Gods Peace and Comfort...
