Lawrence Peter Jones

May 1, 1945 - October 19, 2015

Lawrence Peter Jones was born on May 1, 1945 in Southampton, England, the son of Patricia and Sylvester “Pete” Jones. Pete was raised in Mitchell and graduated from Mitchell Senior High School in 1963. He attended Dakota Wesleyan University, majoring in history and political science, and graduated the summer of 1969.

He married Cheryl “Chris” (Crisman) Jones and they built their life with their two children in Mitchell.  He was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he has served faithfully for years as an usher. Being a 17 year lung cancer survivor, Pete was always willing to share his story of hope with others who faced a similar diagnosis. Pete’s professional life reflected how much he enjoyed working with people. As Juvenile Officer with the Mitchell Police Department, an owner of the Service Café in downtown Mitchell, an interviewer with Job Service of South Dakota, bank courier and as in-town courier for Avera Queen of Peace Hospital, his ability to talk with people and make lasting friends is evidenced by the enduring friendships he has made and kept through the years.

As everyone who knew Pete knows, after God, family and friends, come the New York Yankees! (And if the Yankees are on a winning streak? They may come right after God!) Pete was thrilled to attend two NYY games in New York in August with his son-in-law, John. After the Yankees came the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Pete may have been wearing red, but a New York Yankee cap was always sitting on top of his head!  He was a supporter of DWU’s Team Makers and Mitchell High School basketball, sharing a row of seats with the Krcil’s and Shafer’s.

This past summer Pete and Chris traveled to the east coast going to places that Pete had on a “Wish List.” After visiting with family in I.L., they traveled to the Pro-Football Hall of Fame, experienced the awesome power of the Niagara Falls, traveled to Cooperstown to see the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, traveled in to Manhattan twice, attended “Mama” Mia, visited with family from England, North Carolina, New York, and Virginia, visited the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame, and drove through the Notre Dame campus. And don’t forget, he also attended two games of his beloved Yankees!

Thankful for having shared in Pete’s life are his wife, Cheryl “Chris” of Mitchell, and children, Chad (Jenny Gutierrez) Jones of San Diego, CA and Teri (John) Marciante of Bethpage, NY, his sisters, Marilyn (Alfred Sr.) Koch of Durham, NC and recently found sister, Pat (Sid) Seward, Berrow, Somerset, UK, four granddaughters, Erica and Ashley Marciante and Serena and Raina Jones, brothers and sisters- in-law, Harry and Jan Crisman of Genoa, IL, Clarice and Norman Deal Sr. of Tyndall, and Carlene and Dean Hennies of Rapid City, many loving nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Patricia and Sylvester “Pete” Jones, his brother, Brian Jones, and his in-laws, Annabelle and Harry Crisman.

We all will miss Pete, but you most of all. Pete belongs to that part of us when we were invincible, and I will always remember him that way, young and full of energy. You are in my prayers, and I will not forget Pete. He was in my thoughts under the Friday night lights last weekend. Ne Obliviscaris.

I, too, send condolences to Pete's family after reading in today's Argus Leader about his passing. Pete was a year ahead of our MHS class of '64, but he was always at the center of any good time, always with a sense of adventure and fun. Another good high school buddy who will be remembered fondly. My sympathy to his loved ones.
