LaRayne Gertrude Dodd

December 18, 1920 - November 19, 2015

LaRayne Gertrude Dodd was born on December 18, 1920, to Josephine (Adams) DeJong and Bert DeJong.  She grew up in Storla, SD, and spent much of her childhood helping her dad at the Storla Store. She graduated from Letcher High School in 1937 and was married to Bernard ‘Bud’ Dodd on July 16, 1939.  Their union was blessed with three children; Ronald, James and Lori.

Bud & LaRayne were not only partners in marriage, but partners in business as well.  During the early years of their marriage, they owned the Storla Garage and then in 1947, formed a construction company with Bud’s brother and his wife and moved with the construction business through Montana and into the Black Hills.  In 1950, they moved to Plankinton, SD, and started an implement business.  They owned and operated Dodd Implement from 1950-1972 and just prior to Bud’s death in 1972, they purchased a hardware business, also in Plankinton. LaRayne and son, Jim, operated Dodd Hardware from 1972 until 2000.  LaRayne spent countless hours each day with her fingers flying away on the adding machine, as she not only did the books for the implement and hardware business, but also for L & A Oil Co., a partnership formed between LaRayne and Annie Sauvage.  Despite the long hours of work each day, she still found time to enjoy her family and her favorite hobby of making silk flower arrangements and nut cups for many different community occasions. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church and a member of the Eastern Star for over sixty years.  Her last years were spent at the Brady Nursing Home where she developed many friendships there as well.

She leaves to mourn her passing, her daughter, Lori Fett, (John), Mitchell; seven grandchildren: Robin Page (Scott), Liberty MO; Brad Dodd (Kelly), Liberty, MO; Aaron Dodd (Keri), Gayville, SD; Alison Overbay (Tom), Plankinton, SD; Autumn Picciano (Alex), Sheridan, WY; Britni Fett, Lincoln, NE; and Danielle Johnson (Daren), Plankinton, SD; as well as twelve great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three step-mothers, her step-brother, Robert DeJong, her husband, and her two sons.

LaRayne was a beautiful lady whom once you met you never forgot. She had a welcoming presence with an infectious smile. I was introduced to her by Marlene Dodd who always spoke highly of her mother in law. I am sorry for your loss. Barbara Horton

I will cherish the memories of your mother forever! So many, many memories of a wonderful woman. She was a special person and Plankinton was fortunate to have her on Main Street for so many years. Love to you all
