Dr. Mark Arnold Reynen

December 13, 1967 - June 4, 2016

Dr. Mark Arnold Reynen was born December 13, 1967 in Warren, MN to Don and Evelyn (McFarlane) Reynen while they lived in Stephen, MN. When Mark, the youngest of four boys, was eleven months old, the family moved to Mitchell, SD and a sister was added to the family.

Mark attended Mitchell Public Schools, graduating in 1986. Mark grew up enjoying and participating in the various school and community sports. It was a joy for him to have participated in two State Basketball Championships as a Mitchell Kernel and was part of the record setting team that won 40 straight games.

Mark was baptized and later confirmed in the First Presbyterian Church. He was active in youth and church activities while growing up. Mark graduated from University of South Dakota in 1991. He was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity.

On June 2, 1990, he married his high school sweetheart, Gina Eppel. Mark received his Doctor of Osteopathy from Des Moines University and completed his Family Practice Residency in Sioux Falls. In 1999, Mark joined the Mitchell Clinic where he practiced family medicine.

Lovingly and eagerly welcomed into their family were Kathryn (Katie) Jean in 1994, Emily Noel in 1997, Abbie Evelyn in 1999, and Maggie Elizabeth and Maxwell (Max) Mark in 2002.

Mark loved his wife and children and was an avid fan and supporter of his children’s activities. His favorite place to be was at his family’s cabin on Lake Mitchell. He enjoyed a simple life-running, boating, camping, watching movies with the family (“It’s a Wonderful Life” was a favorite), looking at pick-up trucks with Max, holidays (especially Christmas), his extended family and many friends. His sense of humor, quiet wisdom and a quick wit endeared him to many.

Mark was a faithful member of the Northridge Baptist Church where he was an overseer and a Bible study leader. He was a mentor and encouraged others in their faith. He was a committed follower of Jesus Christ and he witnessed to his faith in his life, his medical practice, and service to others. Mark also was a strong supporter of the Mitchell Christian School.

Thankful for sharing his earthly life and his love and looking forward to sharing his eternal life are his wife, Gina; his children: Katie, Emily, Abbie, Maggie and Max; his parents, Rev. Don and Evelyn Reynen, Mitchell SD; his siblings: Dr. Paul (Carol) Reynen, Sioux Falls, SD, Dr. Peter (Camille) Reynen, Burlington, IA, Dr. Matthew (Diana) Reynen, Aberdeen, SD, and Sarah (Scott) Lepke, Mobridge, SD; nephews and nieces: Major Nathan (Anna) Reynen, Dr. John (Molly) Reynen, Andrew Reynen, Ellie Reynen, Natalie (Brandon) Karels, Clara Reynen, Rachel (Luke) Lynass, Joe Reynen, Sam Reynen, John Reynen, Matthew Lepke, Luke Eppel, and Emma Eppel; grandnephews: Mich and Noah Reynen and Ben Lynass and grandniece; Eden Reynen; mother-in-law, Norma Eppel, Mitchell, SD; sister-in-law, Julie Eppel and brother-in-law, Jerry (Carla) Eppel, Mitchell, SD; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Mark was preceded in death by his grandparents, four uncles, two aunts and two cousins.

Gina and kids, you have been in our prayers and will continue to be in them! Mark was a very special guy and DR. to our family. I remember his disappointment when Joel was born and he was late for the delivery and showed up saying, "wish I would have known Joel was coming so quick, I wouldn't have brushed my teeth so long, and It would have given me an excuse to speed over. I always love to be the first to hold those babies!" He was a caring and wonderful Dr!
My heart aches for your lose and I have shed tears as I have read your walk thru this journey that God has you and your family on. God would be pleased with how you are faithfully walking and sharing so well the hope and heart of God. We will continue to lift you and the kids up in prayer.

Dear Uncle Don, Aunt Evelyn, Gina, and entire family, I am Mark's cousin from Green Bay, Wi. Don and my mom Donna Reynen Thyne were brother and sister. I have been praying and holding all of you close to my heart since the day Mark collapsed. I wish so much I could have come to the funeral. I am a nurse and could not get off work to come. I will continue to pray for all of you for strength, peace and healing. God will hold you up through this difficult time. The days, weeks, months and years to come will be difficult but, God will carry you through your heart ache. I never had the chance to meet Mark. His friendly smile and kind eyes tell me he was a wonderful son, husband, father, and brother. A well respected man in his community and a man of great faith. He also looks so much like his dad. May all the happy memories you hold so dear in your hearts sustain you through the saddest time in your life. May God send you his grace and mercy. God bless to all. Marilyn

I just learned of Mark's passing. I got to know him when I had him as a medical student. We spent time learning medicine and playing basketball in my back yard. What an exceptionally bright and talented young man. All any man can do is to leave the world better than he found it and Mark did that and much more. My prayers are with all of you.
