Gerald (Jerry) Paul Carey was born on April 28, 1942 in Montrose, SD, the son of George and Laverne (Sabers) Carey (deceased). He was educated in the Montrose public school, and after moving to Mitchell in 1952, he attended Notre Dame grade and high school, graduating in 1960. He attended Creighton University in Omaha and transferred to St. John’s University (MN) where he graduated with his BA degree. After college he worked for an insurance company in Indiana and then volunteered at Father Murray’s Sky Ranch for Boys. Thereafter, he worked for the Randall stores, owned and operated businesses in Mitchell, including Jerry Carey Travel and the Depot.
He contributed generously to support his many nieces and nephews, entertained many family gatherings at his home, organized annual celebrations for his friends, and loved hunting, fishing, golfing, and boating with family and friends. He had a big heart and responded to those who were in need. But, most of all, he cherished his family, and they loved him.
He is survived by his wife, Patty, and son, Patrick George of Mitchell; his brother, Patrick (Phyllis) Carey, Newton, WI; and four sisters, Mary (Ed) Kentch, Omaha, NE, Adele Carey, St. Louis, MO, Valerie (Chuck) Erpenbach, Lake St. Louis, MO, and Janine (Larry) Wehrkamp, Rapid City, SD, and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, a contribution to the George and Laverne Carey Scholarship Fund at John Paul II School would be appreciated.
