Donald James Fredrichs

June 25, 1924 - February 22, 2017

Donald James Fredrichs was born June 25, 1924 in Mitchell SD to William and Genevieve (Allen) Fredrichs; he began and ended his circle of life where his grandparents homesteaded in 1883.  Don passed away February 22, 2017 at his home with his daughter and friends under hospice care.  For the past nine years, Don has been residing at the home where he and his brother, Wesley, grew up. He was continuing to be of assistance with the cattle herd, pasture and crops.  The last few months of his life, though difficult and restricted to a wheelchair, he was able to watch the countryside and cattle activities.   The years of hard work resulted in the fun of storytelling to his family and friends. He attended grade school at Sheldon school, and graduated Artesian High School.

He resided in Sanborn Country all his life except for a brief period in the Oklahoma oilfields.  Don married Dolores Dechow, September 1953 and made their home at rural Forestburg.  Don and Dolores ranched and farmed; raising three children, cattle, hay and crops; his storytelling often ended with a chuckle.

Don’s patience and dedication provided for five years of caring for Dolores. After a tractor accident in 2007, and recuperation, he was active in the cattle operation until fall 2016; a week previously he had participated in the annual fall calf-working activities.

He farmed and ranched in the Forestburg, Artesian area his entire life.  Don was a supervisor over 54 years on the Silver Creek township board.  He was extremely proud of township road development.  Don also served on the Forestburg School Board and participated in the Farm Bureau organization. For several years he provided area representation and testimony in Pierre for the water and soil stewardship.

He is survived by children:  Sharon, California, Judy, Artesian and friend, Tom Peckenpaugh, Leon and wife, Mary, Wrangell, Alaska and his cat-Simba, Artesian.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dolores, November 2007, brother, Wesley, 1943 and parents, William and Genevieve Fredrichs.
