Mildred Marie Nesheim was born to Edward and Lillie (Johnson) Nesheim on January 15, 1919 on a farm northwest of Ethan, South Dakota.  She was baptized on April 16, 1919 at the Danish Lutheran Church (Bethania) and confirmed at New Home Lutheran Church in 1932.  She attended Rome No. 35 country school through eighth grade; Ethan High School for one year; and Highmore High School for three years graduating in 1936.  Mildred worked at Bauer Grocery store in Mitchell for about five years.

On March 14, 1943, she married Homer Backlund at New Home Lutheran Church.  They lived on the Backlund family farm until 1987 when they moved into Mitchell.

Through the years Mildred was a very active member of New Home.  She also belonged to Rosedale Community Club, Farmers Union, and the Mitchell Senior Citizens Center where she volunteered with several groups.  She liked to be involved and once said, “If you keep busy, it keeps your mind alert.”  Another saying often heard from her was, “I walk today so I can walk tomorrow.”  She and Homer went on several bus tours to various parts of the country.  Thanksgiving and Christmas family events were highlights for Mildred, and she thoroughly enjoyed these.

She is survived by her children: Judith (Donald) Gohl, Sioux Falls, SD; David (Deanell) Backlund, Mitchell, SD; and Daniel (Tama) Backlund, Mitchell, SD; her grandchildren: Amy (Dean) Vedin, Gregg (JJ) Gohl, Eric (Pam) Gohl, David (Luann) Backlund, Douglas Backlund, Sunny (Matt) Bellows, and Nicolas (Avery Findlay, fiancée) Backlund; and her nine great grandchildren: Gage, Drew and Lauryn Gohl; Carson and Cate Gohl; Ronnie Vedin; Leighton and London Backlund; and Vivienne Bellows; and one sister, Violet Carlson, Hagerstown, MD.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one brother, Clarence Nesheim; one sister, Opal Titze; two brothers-in-law: Marvin Titze and Paul Carlson ; five sisters-in-law: Ruth Nesheim, Edna (Algot) Gulberg, Minnie (Grant) Meyers, Carrie (John) Wells, and Gladys (Jim) Carlson; and one great grandson, Ronald Tyson Vedin.

Memorials may be directed to New Home Lutheran Church, The Mitchell Food Pantry, or The Avera Hospice.
