James L. Oberembt

James L. Oberembt, 91, of Mitchell, SD died Saturday, December 2, 2017 at Avera Brady Health and Rehab in Mitchell. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 AM Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at Holy Family Catholic Church with Father Ken Lulf officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be 5-7:00 PM Monday at the church with a 7:00 PM Scripture Service with Rosary. 

James Leo Oberembt was born to William and Josephine (Schlimgen) Oberembt on September 4th, 1926.  He was born and raised on a farm by Dimock, SD. He attended Dimock Parochial School. He was in the US Army from 1945 – 1947.  He married Adeline Schmidt on June 12th, 1951. Together they had 11 children. He was a lifelong farmer and was employed by Dakota Manufacturing, Owatonna, and Trail King, retiring in 1992.

Jim was devoted to his faith and was a long time member of Holy Family Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was an avid volunteer for the James Valley Community Center, Holy Family Catholic Church, Meals on Wheels, Abbott House, MAATC, and Mitchell Kernel and DWU sporting events.

His hobbies included golfing, playing cards, and spending hundreds of hours watching his grandchildren’s numerous activities.  He was an avid Twins and Vikings fan, along with all the local sport teams.

He was a devoted husband and father and survived by his wife, Adeline, children: Tom (Diora) Oberembt, Mitchell, SD; Lois (Bill) Stuefen, Elkton, SD; JoEllen (Darrell) Gates, Mitchell, SD; James, Jr. (Mary) Oberembt, Roaring River, NC;  Jane (Dan) Guericke, White Lake, SD; Audrey (Joel) Stahl, Mitchell, SD; Ruth (Phil) Benedict, Sioux Falls, SD; Lea Ann (Mike) Peschong, Marshalltown, IA; Pat (Sandy) Oberembt, Eagan, MN; Carol Cersosimo, Mitchell, SD. Grandchildren Aaron Oberembt, Stephanie (Jon) Lowe,  Roxanne (Chad) Portner,  Chad (Jenny) Gates, Jennifer (Justin) VonEye, Brad (Kayla) Gates, Stephen (Stephanie) Gates, Nicole (Shane) Lagasse, Steven (Suzanne) Lagasse, Mark (Melinda Krumvieda) Guericke, Laura (Garret) Bergeleen, Jill (Nick Rolfsmeier) Guericke, Jason (Jillian) Stahl, Amy (Wes) Hendrix, Dustin (Abby) Stahl, Joseph Benedict, Sam Benedict, Katie Benedict, Jamie Benedict, Andrew (Tori) Peschong, Tyler (Kaylee Smith) Peschong, Nicole Peschong, Alexa Oberembt, Claudia Oberembt, Brooke Cersosimo, Kendra Cersosimo, and Jacob Cersosimo; and 27 great-grandchildren.  He was also survived by his siblings, Bill (Edna) Oberembt, Mitchell, SD; Sister Doris Oberembt, OSB, Yankton, SD; Bob (Rose) Oberembt, Mitchell, SD; Elaine Kirsch, Fulda, MN, Brother-in-laws, Ray Schneider, William Roth, and John Simon.

He was preceded in death by, a son, Joseph Charles Oberembt,  his Parents, his Mother and Father-in–law, Frank and Theresa Schmidt, his siblings, Sister Mary Ann Oberembt, OSB; Aletha Schneider, Sister Carol Oberembt, OSB, Bernice Roth, Rose Simon, Millie Trautman, his brother-in–laws, Dale Kirsch and Marv Trautman.
