Donald Florian Ebersdorfer

October 15, 1926 - February 16, 2018

Donald Florian Ebersdorfer was born on October 15, 1926 at the family farm west of Parkston, S.D. to John J. and Martha (Nipp) Ebersdorfer. He received his education at Sacred Heart Catholic School, Parkston and in Dimock at St. Peter and Paul Catholic School. Two months after his eighteenth birthday, Don was drafted into the U.S. Army. He trained and served as an armored and tank driver during World War II in the Asiatic Pacific. After the war ended, Don served “Occupation” for a year on the island of New Caledonia. He was honorably discharged on August 21, 1946. Next, Don worked road construction in the Black Hills.

Don met his future wife, Agatha Schmit and was married on May 28, 1952 at St Charles Catholic Church in Artesian. The couple lived briefly in Mitchell where Don drove truck for Al’s Produce. They moved to Rapid City in 1953 since Don was employed at Ellsworth Air Force Base. Don and Aggie returned in 1955 to farming near Artesian for sixty years and raised their four children. He enjoyed farm life and the livestock.

Don joined WWII veterans in 2009 on SD Honor Flight to visit the WWII memorial in Washington, DC.  Don enjoyed country music and was an avid rodeo fan. For thirty years he and Aggie attended the “Days of 76” rodeo.  Family gatherings and pheasant hunting season were looked forward to annually. Don had a dessert preference for anything chocolate, especially candy. He often attended farm auctions and the Mitchell Livestock to buy or sell cattle.  Aggie, his wife of sixty-three years, died on October 14, 2015. Don continued living at the farm for a brief time prior to entering Prairie View Care in Woonsocket, June 2017.

Grateful for sharing his life are his son, Jeff (Molly) Ebersdorfer, Artesian; daughters: Connie (Rod) Vermeulen, Madalyn, Abigail, Mitchell, Jodi (Keith) Theisen, Kaycee, Morgan, Clear Lake, Douglas Wudel, John (Amanda) Athena, Steve, Lennox; sister, Dr. Janice Ebersdorfer, Mitchell; sister- in- law, LaVonne Schmit, Mitchell; nieces, nephews, cousins and cherished friends.
