Dorla Dean Verhey was born July 26, 1934 at home in Winfred, SD to Frank L. and Bernice (Westall) Wesp. The family moved to Madison, SD where Dorla started school. They moved to Sioux City, IA in 1941, where she attended McKinley Elementary, East Jr. Middle School, and East High School. While spending the summer with her grandparents near Winfred, she met their neighbor Donald Verhey and after a long distance romance, they married the next summer on July 21, 1951.
Following Don’s career with Peavey Elevators, and Cenex Co-ops, they had many homes and gained many friends. They lived in Winfred, Cuthbert, Howard, Storla, Woonsocket, and Mitchell, SD. They branched out and spent five years in Cody and Greybull, WY, before moving back to Mitchell in retirement. Over the years, Dorla worked as a bookkeeper at Storla, Woonsocket, Mitchell, and Greybull Co-ops. After returning to Mitchell, she worked at the Pin Cushion where she developed a great love for quilting. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was a member of Winfred UCC, Storla Lutheran Church, Bethany Lutheran Church in Woonsocket, Cody Lutheran Church, and First Lutheran Church in Mitchell. She served on the Council as a Deacon and held several offices for the First Lutheran Church, Church Women, and Prairie River’s Conference. She also had membership with the Heartland Quilters Guild, Friendship Circle Extension Club, Yesteryear Antique Club, and Order of the Eastern Star.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Donald in 2002; brother Captain Thomas Wesp; her parents; and a granddaughter, Jeanine Smith.
She is survived by her children, Duane (Vernice) Verhey, Renner, SD, Kim (Jayne) Verhey, Madison, SD, Michael (Tammy) Verhey, Fargo, ND, and Deborah Verhey (Mike Wallace), Cody, WY; 10 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
