Anthony Kummer, 89, of Mitchell died, Saturday, August 4, 2018 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell. Funeral services will be 11:30 am Monday, August 6, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Parkston. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Bittner Funeral Chapel.
Anthony Joseph Kummer was born August 8, 1928 in Parkston, SD to Anthony F. and Elizabeth M. (Jungwirth) Kummer. He attended school at Sacred Heart Parochial in Parkston. He served 2 years in the military in Korea with the 987th AFA. He served 22 years in the National Guard and retired as an SFC-E7.
He married Kaye Magstadt on February 28, 1957. He lived in Parkston until 1981, when he moved to Mitchell. He worked at Parkston Creamery, Vern’s Body Shop, Ritter-Walz Implement, and as a custodian at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Holy Family Catholic Church, and DWU and retired in 1990.
Anthony was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, a life-long member of the VFW, American Legion, SD Enlisted Men’s Association, and National Enlisted Men’s Association. He was also a member of the National Association for Uniformed Services, Post EMTA, and was a member of Knights of Columbus since 1946.
He is survived by his wife, Kaye Kummer, Mitchell; children Mark Kummer, Pensacola, FL, Lyle Kummer, Sioux Falls, Scott Kummer, Charlotte, NC; Kathy Sibson, Mitchell, and Lisa Janis, Sioux Falls; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; siblings, Theresa Bigge, Sioux Falls, Lewis Kummer, Omaha, Marlene Olson, Goldsboro, NC, Dorothy Osak Visalia, CA, Duane Kummer, Mitchell, SD, Joanne Hegg, Mitchell, and Carol Long, Omaha.
He is preceded in death by his siblings, Norman Kummer, Florian Kummer, and Elizabeth Degen.
