JoAnn Payne

June 21, 1948 - September 10, 2018

JoAnn Payne, 70, Mitchell, died Monday, September 10, 2018 surrounded by her loving family.

Funeral services will be 10:30 am Friday, September 14 at Northridge Baptist Church 323 W. 23rd St. in Mitchell. Burial will be in the Plankinton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 pm Thursday with a prayer service at 7:00 pm at the Bittner Funeral Chapel 805 W. Havens in Mitchell.

JoAnn entered this world on June 21, 1948 in Plankinton, SD to her late parents Leonard C. and Effie E. (Brink) Johnson. JoAnn attended Plankinton High School graduating in 1966 then marrying her high school sweetheart Willard “Bill” Payne on June 16, 1966. They resided in Huron, Custer and Mitchell, SD. JoAnn worked at the Methodist Hospital, Firesteel Healthcare Center, New York Life Insurance but her true passion in life was caring for children. She began her career as an In-home Daycare provider in April 1990. She was like no other, as she taught these children love, respect and life-long skills. There was always a sparkle in her eyes and a smile on her face whenever she talked about her daycare kids, who called her JoJo. Being known as the “best” at what she did, everyone in town wanted her to take their children.

JoAnn enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She loved making baby blankets and throws for those she loved. Her beautiful work will be remembered in the hearts of those fortunate to have received this gift. JoAnn loved to cook and bake, making holiday trays for neighbors and friends filled with sugar cookies, bars and candy. She loved what nature provided her to see. She has always been an avid reader.

Such a love for books which she instilled in her daughter, Amanda. JoAnn was selfless with a heart filled with love putting everyone else first. A very strong and courageous woman. We cherish her and hold a piece of her in each of our hearts. She was a woman possessing amazing faith and she loved the Lord with all her heart and all her soul as He loved her. She’s earned her “wings” and will always be our guardian angel.

She is survived by her caring husband of 52 years, Bill Payne. She was the beloved mother of Bill (Ann) Payne, Michael (Liz) Payne, Darin (Ellen) Payne and Amanda Payne. She was the loving grandmother of Karissa Payne, Brayley Jo Payne, Michael Anaya, Ryan Shamblin, Amber Payne, Brittany Anderson, Blake (Monique) Anderson, Heather (Jared) Schulz, Dustin Payne, Maddie Larsen and Camden Payne. She adored her two great-grandchildren Scarlett and Michael Ayden. JoAnn was the loving sister of Ron (Lois) Johnson, Don (Bonnie) Johnson and Carol Jean Johnson. She held a special place in her heart for her nieces and nephews and so many cousins.

Bill and family, I am so sorry to learn of Joann's leaving this earth. We had some good times in the "old" neighborhood. I will always remember her kindness, compassion, and friendliness. She was indeed a beautiful person and will be missed by all fortunate enough to have known her.
