Mary Lou (Wertz) Kelly was born on September 10, 1934 in Perry Township at home on the farm, near Mitchell, SD, to Arthur Otis Wertz and Beatrice Helena (Renshaw) Wertz. Mary Lou grew up in Mitchell and graduated from Mitchell Senior High. Mary Lou worked as a secretary to Attorney Fred Tinan for a short time before getting married.

Mary Lou was united in marriage with Elroy Duane Kelly, son of Gilmore Wilson Kelly and Hattie Emma Marie (Radensleben) Kelly, on February 14, 1953. They made their home on the farm in rural Fulton, SD.

Mary Lou was always an avid reader and it was told that after lights were supposed to be out at night as a kid she would be reading with a flashlight under the covers! She loved oil painting scenic pictures, rose malling, tole painting, and making gifts of Christmas tree bulbs that she painted with winter scenes. Mary Lou also taught painting classes to those that wanted to learn different painting techniques. She enjoyed watching baseball games on the TV. Mary Lou also loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a country music fan, especially Johnny Cash. Mary Lou was employed at Randall’s and Coborn’s for many years.

Mary Lou’s survivors include her children, Kevin (Patty) Kelly of Mitchell, SD, Karen (Duane) Peschong of Strandburg, SD, Brian (Cindy) Kelly of Mitchell, SD, and Barbara (Vale) Krietlow of Mitchell, SD; brother Donald Wertz, Lavinia, Montana; sister Hazel Hansen, Sioux Falls, SD; and many grandchildren, step-grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Mary Lou was preceded in death by her husband Elroy; her children, infant twin sons, Dennis and Doyle Kelly, son Bruce Kelly, and daughter Bonnie Abbott; granddaughter Teresa Mentele; great-granddaughter Gianna Wehrkamp; brothers Glen Wertz, Dean Wertz, infant brother Harold Wertz, and Gale Wertz; and sister Joyce Brugman.

We, Mary Lou’s family, thank you for helping us celebrate her life. She will be missed by all. We are also thankful for those that have passed on before that have now welcomed her with open arms. Rest in peace Mary Lou. We love you!

I spent a lot of time on the farm with my cousins and I am so thankful to Aunt Mary Lou for all she did to have me. She was so loving and kind. Mike and I enjoyed the times we RV'd together at Lake Mitchell during hunting season. She was such a sweetie and I will miss her. All my best to her family and my dear cousins.

My Aunt Mary Lou always had a smile; I will miss her so very much. She was loving, artistic, funny and beautiful. We're lucky she had a large family.
