DeWayne E. Honomichl

DeWayne E. Honomichl, 86, of Mitchell, SD died Saturday, October 20, 2018 at his home under hospice care.

Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Mitchell with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial with military honors will be at Servicemen’s Memorial Cemetery in Mitchell. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel. 

DeWayne Eugene Honomichl was born April 2, 1932 in Wagner, SD to Clara (Schultz) and John Honomichl Jr. He was the oldest of seven children. He went to school at Wagner through eighth grade, and later earned his GED at Marty Mission. He enlisted in the US Army in 1950, where he served for three years before being honorably discharged. He did masonry work and worked on the Ft. Randall Dam.

In 1955, he joined the SD National Guard as Shop Foreman. He retired from the Civil Service in 1986 and the National Guard in 1992 with the rank of E-8 1 Sergeant and had 40 years of military service.

He married Anieta Vogel in on March 29, 1980 at First Lutheran Church in Mitchell. The couple traveled full time in a fifth wheel trailer for 19 years. They loved the lifestyle, meeting many friends in all 50 states, all provinces of Canada, and parts of Mexico. They called Mitchell, SD their home in 2003, and they continued to travel at a slower pace in a motor home and went on bus tours. Dewayne enjoyed sports, hunting, fishing, playing cards, and crafting. He was a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church in Mitchell, and helped build their new building.  He had a very active life and will be missed by many.

He is survived by his wife, Anieta; children, Nadine (Ron) Opbroek, Sanford, MI, Veronica Nelson, Austin, TX, Audrey (Roy) Fischer, Parkston, Scott Honomichl, Wagner, and Doreen (Rod) Pattison, Harrisburg; brothers Gary (Diann) Honomichl and John (Dorothy) Honomichl, both of Yankton; sisters, Jackie Pudwill, Yankton and Karen (Robert) Johnson, Bloomington, MN; twelve grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Leota Hendricks; brother, Donald Honomichl; and son Robert Honomichl.

Memorials may be directed to the Resurrection Lutheran Church in Mitchell, SD.
