I happened to see “Mr. Fluegel’s” death notice in the Argus Leader. He was my music teacher for three years when I attended Mitchell Junior High. So many good memories of his trying to impart his love of music and the master composers to a gaggling group of ditzy adolescents. With Naomi Pratt as the director, our 9th graders put on the Christmas production “Tiny Tim” based on Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. He was such a supportive, caring teacher and he’d be happy to know his love of music did rub off! Carried on so ably by Mr. Ellington in high school, the foundation Mr. Fluegel laid was the springboard for a wonderful appreciation of how notes on a page could translate into the most meaningful and heart-stirring performances. Blessed be his memory.
