Joan Gaston

May 26, 1931 - November 29, 2018

Joan Gaston, 87, Mitchell, formerly of Artesian, died November 29, 2018 at Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Thursday, December 6, 2018 at St. Charles Catholic Church in Artesian, SD. Burial will be at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Artesian. Visitation will be 5-7:00 PM Wednesday at Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell.

Joan was born in Huron, SD on May 26, 1931 and was soon after adopted by Leon and Anna (Crawford) Rudy of Artesian, SD. Joan married Royal "Bud" Gaston on March 3, 1951. They were blessed with four children. Linda Horner, Hot Springs SD; Nita Kingsbury, Williamsburg VA; Peggy Konopka, Woodstock IL; and Steve (Judy) Gaston, Mitchell. They farmed north of Artesian until Bud's death in 1976.

Joan then moved to Artesian and worked at Dethlef's Flower Shop in Mitchell. In 1979 Joan moved to Denver, CO, where she worked at The Denver Clothing Store for several years. She retired and moved back to Artesian in 1991, where she was involved in numerous organizations. She was very happy to be involved in the Senior Meals program for the community of Artesian. In 2015 she moved to Mitchell.

Joan enjoyed reading and doing crafts of all sorts. She made friends easily everywhere she lived. She loved to socialize with her old friends and with her new "besties" at Cathedral Squares, where she enjoyed sharing her baked gifts. She loved playing cards with her friends and was known for her caramel rolls.

By chance, through DNA testing, Joan learned this year that she had a half-brother, Bob Pratt of Grants Pass, OR, who had been searching for her for many years. They were able to meet and get to know each other when Bob visited her this summer.

Joan is survived and will be missed by her 4 children, 7 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren and her sister-in-law, Ardith Thompson of Lincoln, NE. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Bud, and two sons-in-law, Gene Horner and Phil Konopka.

To Joan's family: I'm very sorry for your loss. I hope you can find comfort in the words found at Psalms 147:3 that says "He is healing the broken hearted ones and is binding up their painful spots". Our thoughts are with you.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family. During this difficult time the Bible gives comfort and hope for the future. Imagine a time when your loved one is able to enjoy her favorite activities, the company of good friends and family, while living with perfect health and peaceful conditions forever. This is a beautiful hope held out for the future. The Bible says “the meek will possess the earth… and they will live forever on it.” (Psalm 37:11,29; John 5:28,29) .
