Obituary

Varland Hansen, 81, Mitchell, SD died Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at Firesteel Healthcare Center.

Memorial services will be 2:00 pm Saturday, January 26 at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Mitchell. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church. Arrangements are with the Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell.

Varland C. Hansen was born December 26, 1937 in Mitchell to Oliver and Lillian (Grout) Hansen. He grew up attending Rosedale Country School and graduated from Ethan High School in 1956. He served in the US Navy. On December 11, 1966 he married Lindale Nickles at First Lutheran Church in Mitchell. They resided on their farm northeast of Ethan. In 1996 they moved to Mitchell where he was employed by James Valley Nursery for numerous years and most recently worked at Walmart.

He is survived by his son, Dana Hansen of Mount Vernon, brother, Marol (Peggy) Hansen of Lakewood, CO, daughter-in-law, Carey Hansen of Rapid City and five grandchildren: Devin, Ashlynn, Sheridan, Brooklyn and Lauryn; brother-in-law Jim Synhorst of Hot Springs.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lindale in July 2018, son Jared in April 2018, a brother Gerald, and sister LeAtta Synhorst.

So sorry to hear about Varland. I was his classmate in Ethan. It was good to see him at our 50th reunion a number of years age. He was always a real gentleman.

very good man i am going to miss him a lot there is not going to be any one like him ever the great teacher he taught me a lot and still one of a kind

My deepest sympathy to the family. I always enjoy visiting with Varland at Walmart. Will remember him as a hard working man that loved his family.
