Obituary

Jay Christensen, 78, of Mitchell, died Monday, January 28, 2019 in the comfort of his own home.

Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Friday, February 1, 2019 at Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 PM Thursday, January 31 at Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Jay David Christensen was born May 2, 1940 in Highmore, SD to Victor Sr. and Elsie “Ruth” (Stoley) Christensen. He graduated from Highmore High School in 1958 and worked various jobs in the Highmore area. Jay married Vesta Gimbel on November 9, 1968 in Miller, SD. The couple resided in Highmore until 1977 and later operated a dairy farm until 1994. They moved to Mitchell where Jay worked for Dakota Manufacturing until retiring in 2008. In recent years he operated his own saw sharpening business.

Jay enjoyed fishing, camping, and gardening. He loved spending time with his family, friends, and pets.

He is survived by his wife, Vesta; children, Julie (Steven) Norvell, Parker, SD, Kirk (Amanda) Christensen, Mitchell, Angela (Philip) Van’t Haaff, Mitchell; grandchildren, Jessie Schlaffman, Cassidy Larson, Cody Larson, Trenton Christensen, Lanie Kaas, Luke Van’t Haaff, and Molly Van’t Haaff; and great-grandchildren, Auden and Vayla Schlaffman.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Victor Christensen Jr; and sister Arlene Kutz.

Vesta, Angie, Julie, Kirk and family. I am so sorry for the loss of you husband/dad. I didn't know him all to well, but he seemed to be a wonderful man. I thinking of you all and God Bless.
