Dorothy Dennis (Mehlhaff) was born January 8, 1935 in Tripp, South Dakota.  Her life started on the homestead farm the youngest of 3 daughters; parents being Edward and Bertha (Buchholz) Mehlhaff.  She passed away on March 15, 2019 at the age of 84.  She was able to live independently even with her ALS diagnosis until the last days of her life.

If you knew Dorothy you knew she was an extremely gifted seamstress and quilter.  To her family she was an amazing mother and grandmother.  She loved to entertain, garden and was a fabulous cook.  She was famous for her German dishes.  She was generous with her time and talents putting others before herself.

Dorothy worked in accounting at both Barry and Sons and Palace Motors in Mitchell until her early retirement at the age of 58.  She married Lorin Dennis on January 1, 1984. Because of their early retirement; they were able to travel the world together.  This included traveling to places such as Europe, China, Korea and Africa.  They also motor-homed the entire United States.  A big part of Dorothy’s life was volunteering for RVICS (Roving Volunteers In Christ Service). For 18 years through this program she was able to share her passions of sewing, quilting and cooking to help others.

She was a member of the Mitchell Wesleyan Church, was the church treasurer and on the board for many years.

The most important thing in Dorothy’s life was her family.  Blessed to have shared her life are her three daughters  Paula (Cliff) Vanderbush, Rapid City; Brenda (Paul Floren) Uttecht, Sioux Falls; Angela (Jeff) Leonard, Spearfish; her two step-daughters Julie (Scott) Phinney, Green Bay WI; Melanie (Greg) Doetzel , Sioux Falls; and her step-son Andrew  Stanger, Minneapolis MN; her sister (and best friend) Florence Semmler;  many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Lorin, her parents, her sister and two step-daughters.

Families are like quilts…Lives pieced together – Stitched with smiles and tears, colored with memories and bound by love.

I have so many wonderful memories of Dorothy!! She was one of the sweetest ladies I have ever known and also very talented! I grew up with her as my Sunday school teacher, mother/step mother to 4 of my dearest friends, and the super talented seamstress who helped me with the alterations on my wedding dress!! When I would be at the house after school with Julie, she no doubt would have some delicious cookies for us to enjoy! I will remember Dorothy's smile and laugh, for she was very generous with both. I loved to hear her tell of the adventures she and Lorin had with their RV ministry group. It broke my heart to see her suffering from the ALS these past few she is with Jesus and completely freed of suffering and pain!! PTL! I will miss saying goodbye and seeing all of you as we are out of town on a family vacation this week. My love and prayers are with you all in the coming days.

Sad to hear of Dorothy's passing, but blessed to know that she ran into her Savior's arms! She and Lorin were great friends to me as I served their church and her smile will be missed

My deepest Sympathy to the family of Dorothy. I met Dorothy a few years ago and what a sweet spirit Dorothy had, always a kind and uplifting attitude she displayed. Her love for the Lord certainly shined through her daily living. She was a precious soul. She is rejoicing in Heaven.
