Obituary

Pauline Hohn, age 76, passed away at her home on April 6 surrounded by her family and loved ones.

Pauline was the third blessing born to Maynard and Thelma (Carpenter) Page at the Methodist Hospital in Mitchell, SD on January 11, 1943. She was the oldest daughter of 15 children and quickly took on a leadership role to care for and teach her siblings. This leadership continued throughout her career and life, as she was a rock and woman of wisdom for so many.

After graduating high school in Fedora, Pauline met a man who would change her life forever. On October 20, 1962, she married the love of her life, Larry E. Hohn, in Mitchell, SD. After their wedding, Pauline and Larry moved to Lead, SD after Larry accepted a position at the mine in Deadwood. In 1966, Pauline and Larry moved back to Mitchell, where they would remain. Later that year, Pauline accepted a position as a certified surgical technician at the hospital in Mitchell after discovering that cleaning bedpans and swapping peoples’ dentures as a nurse’s aide wasn’t her forte. She made a career in surgery and retired after 40 years in 2006. During her time in surgery, she was able to use her leadership traits to teach and train others, which is what many of her friends remember her by.

Pauline’s family would like you to remember Pauline for the spunky, feisty, stubborn, strong-willed, and sharp-minded woman she was. She always knew when to crack a joke and was the queen of one-liners and eye rolls (queue eye roll here). She always knew what to say and would gladly give her opinion when asked for it, even when she knew you wouldn’t like it.

Her love and support for her family was second-to-none. She loved, more than anything, to spend time with her family and friends. She was her grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s biggest supporter, always making it a priority to attend any event that they were participating in, including sporting events where she may have sometimes gotten just a little vocal.

She enjoyed traveling. This included traveling for girls’ trips or sisters’ trips with her family, traveling for sporting events, traveling to Flandreau or Grand Falls to test her luck at the casinos, or traveling across town to enjoy a dinner with her friends.

Pauline was a planner. When she would find out someone was coming to visit her, she would often think of a whole list of items for you to do, and would begin telling you as soon as you walked through her front door. And if she didn’t want to plan something, she would have a plan on who would be planning it, and you best do it.

She enjoyed the friendship and traveling with the Red Hat Society members. If you couldn’t find her here, you could likely find her at the Senior Center playing cards or Mahjong with her friends.

Pauline is leaving behind her three wonderful children, Cindy (Greg) Haraldson, Judy (Randy) Nelson, and James (Diana) Hohn;  her four beautiful grandchildren, Amanda (Randy) Wharton, Christopher (Cassie) Nelson, Steven Haraldson, and Paige (Jeff) Weeldreyer; four amazing great-grandchildren, Ava, Elliot, and Bella Wharton, and Cooper Nelson; brothers and sisters, Don (Karen) Page, Darrel (Phyllis) Page, Ray (Linda) Page, Audrey Pierson, Millie Page, Mary (Larry) Shoemaker, Carol (Cliff) Weidel, Dale (Diane) Page, Randy (Donna) Page, Jane Page-Marten, Terri (Kirk) Severson, Cathy (Gary) Cuka, Danny (Gibi) Page, and Anita (Layne) Nicholson.

Pauline was preceded in death by her husband Larry E Hohn, parents Maynard and Thelma Page, in-laws Florian and Caroline Hohn, brothers Tom and Rick Page, and nephews Andy Page and Brad Nicholson.

Family, friends, and others whose lives were touched by Pauline are invited to Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell for a visitation on Tuesday, April 9, from 5:00-7:00 pm, with a scripture service beginning at 6:30 pm. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, April 10 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell. Arrangements are by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, Pauline’s family suggests memorial contributions be sent to your local hospice care center or to Avera Prayer Quilts Foundation.

Just think how many lives Pauline touched in her 40 year career in the surgery department. Not only did she provide excellent care to the patients, but to the physicians and coworkers as well. She will be remembered by many.
