Obituary

Bernita Tammen, 95, Emery, SD died Monday, April 15, 2019, at Sanford Ava’s House in Sioux Falls.

Funeral services will be 10:30 am Friday, April 19 at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Emery. Burial will be in the Emery Community Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 am until the time of the service at the church on Friday. Arrangements are with the Hettinger-Bittner Funeral Chapel in Emery.

Bernita Mae Tammen was born October 20, 1923 at the family farm near Alexandria to Clarence and Edna (Bennett) Kewley. She grew up attending country school and graduated from Alexandria High School in 1941.  On July 19, 1947 she married Richard Harvey Tammen in Luverne, MN. They farmed in the Emery and Alexandria area until retiring and then moved to Emery in June 1996. Bernita helped Harvey farm, enjoyed raising chickens, a large garden and canning. She loved to cook for her family. Her granddaughter’s loved spending time, making memories at grandma’s when they were young. She was a member of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church and the Ladies Aide.

She is survived by one daughter, Sheryl (Tom) McCormick of Sioux Falls, two granddaughters: Melissa (Bill) Goeken of Dell Rapids, Theresa McCormick-Ezra Clark of Sioux Falls, four great grandchildren: Mason and Matthew Goeken and Samantha and Kenzley Clark, daughter-in-law, Leanne Tammen of Sioux Falls, two sisters: Vida (Marvin) Champion of Indiana and Fauna (Randy) Kappenman of Mitchell.

She was preceded in death by her husband, son, Ronald, eight sisters: Violet, Mabel, Lavina, Geneva, Phyllis, Fern, Lillian and Dorothy, four brothers: Donald, Clarence, Claude, and Harold.

We are sorry to hear of Bernita passing . She was a wonderful person and a great sister. Our prayers are for your family . We would like to have been there but it is very hard for us to travel .All our love.
