Mary Franey, 97, of Mitchell, SD, died Sunday, September 29, 2019, at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Monday, October 7, 2019 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell. Burial will be at the American Legion Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be from 3-5:00 PM Sunday at Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell with a 4:30 PM Scripture Service.

Mary Annette Franey was born July 8, 1922 in Emery to Francis and Mary Elizabeth (Loes) Curtin. After losing her mother at the age of two, she grew up on her grandparent's farm in McCook County. She attended St. Martins Boarding School in Emery through 8th grade. She went her first three years of high school in Bridgewater and graduated from Spencer High School in 1940. She continued her education at St Joseph's Nursing School graduating in 1943.

Mary met Norman Franey in Spencer, SD, and they were united in marriage on March 14, 1943.

They moved their family to Mitchell in September of 1950. She raised their six children with love, guidance, and constant communication. Throughout her life, her door was always open to both family and friends alike. She especially delighted in being involved in all her grandchildren's lives and in later years enjoyed visits from her great-grandchildren.

Mary loved good conversation and discussions on a variety of topics. If she wasn’t familiar with the subject, she was interested in learning something new. She loved to read, to watch Jeopardy, to do the Daily Jumble in the newspaper, and to stay current on information and events. Additionally, she learned to play bridge at a young age and never turned down an opportunity to play. She belonged to many bridge clubs throughout her life even into her nineties. Mary also enjoyed playing card games and board games with family.

Mary strongly believed in the value of hard work and personal responsibility. She was an intelligent, quick learner, which allowed her to successfully navigate several careers through the years. First, she worked as a registered nurse at St. Joseph Hospital and Brady Memorial. Later, she displayed a fabulous sense of style working at Feinstein's Clothing Store in the 1970s. Finally, she went back to school to become a successful realtor in Mitchell in the 1980s. In addition, she was devoted to her faith and a lifetime member of Holy Family Catholic Church. She was involved in the altar society and often served in leadership roles in the church.

Mary is survived by her children, Jo Elaine (Gene) Haiar, Mitchell, Anne (Dale) Smith, Mitchell, Patti (Jerry) Smith, Mitchell, Jill (Jim) Baukus, Chamberlain, Mark Franey, Mitchell, and Kay Meyers, Sioux Falls; 16 grandchildren, Jeff Haiar, Susan (Brian) Muehlbeier, Gina (Kevin) Jensen, Denise (Tom) Shields, Lori (Jason) Schmit, Kara (Brandon) Stange, Teresa (Dennis) Schley, Jennifer (Brad) Fischer, Adam (Jody) Smith, Amy (Dan) Comfert, Daniel (Tara) Baukus, Sarah (Blain) Hieb, Eric (Tara) Franey, Kyle (Becky) Franey, Kacie (Jason) Kreifels, and Kristi (Mason) Ruthford; 35 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren, sister-in-law, Emily Curtin.

She was preceded in death by husband, Norman; brother, Peter Curtin; and two very special aunts, Mary Urell and Sara Neumayr.
