Alvin Henry Nolz, 87, passed away surrounded by loved ones on October 4, 2019 at Avera Brady Health & Rehab in Mitchell.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, October 8, 2019 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 PM Monday at Bittner Funeral Chapel, with a 6:30 PM Prayer Service.
Alvin, son of Joseph and Mary (Tischler) Nolz, was born January 3, 1932. He grew up near Parkston and later moved to Delmont with his parents and siblings. He attended school in Parkston and Delmont. He graduated from Delmont Country School in 1946.
He worked on the family farm and entered the Army in December 1951. He attended Basic Training in Fort Riley, Kansas. He served two years in the United States Army spending one year in Misawa Air Base in Japan. He received an Honorable Discharge in Fort Carson, Colorado in 1953.
Alvin married Devona Katherine Weber on November 17, 1956 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Parkston. Together they had three children, Sharon, David and Dennis.
After his years in the Service, he returned to the farm near Delmont for four years and then moved to a farm by Mount Vernon, where Alvin and Devona lived for nine years. In 1970, they purchased a farm northeast of Mitchell. In 1982, Alvin and his son, David, started Nolz Limousin and sold purebred bulls to area cattlemen.
In 1990, Alvin and Devona moved into Mitchell, but Alvin’s love of the land and livestock carried on. He continued to work on the farm until he retired at the age of 64.
Alvin was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus American Legion Post 0018.
In his spare time, Alvin enjoyed traveling on bus tours, polka dancing, playing cards with friends, reading western books and spending time with his family.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Devona; daughter Sharon Park and her husband Dan of Sioux Falls; son David and his wife Peggy of Mitchell; son Dennis and his wife Kelli of Garretson; grandchildren Travis, Jodi, Christa, Amanda, Courtney, Kaley, Emily, Andy and Erin; great-grandchildren Atley, Ayrie, Addy, Scarlett, Thorne, Croix, Holly, Isla and Isiah; brother-in-law Nick Weber and his wife Mary; and sister-in-law Sally Hohn and her husband Alfred.
Alvin was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Mary Nolz; sister, Caroline Frederick; and brothers, Ray and Louis Nolz.
