Constance Mae Laird was born to John and Judith (Baker) Usher on December 6, 1930, in Mitchell, SD. She graduated from Mitchell High School in 1948 and attended one year at Dakota Wesleyan University in 1949. Connie married her true love Wayne Laird on November 30, 1949, in Sioux Falls, SD. Wayne and Connie began their adventure in marriage residing in the Fulton area where they welcomed two daughters; Judy Rae and Peggy Ann. In 1957, the family moved to their homestead located Southeast of Mitchell, where Wayne farmed fulltime, Connie started working at the Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service and worked there from 1957 to 1987. The family belonged to the First United Methodist Church.

Wayne and Connie loved to travel, and ventured to places as far away as Alaska, Hawaii, Panama, Austria and also cruised the seas. Although they loved visiting new places, they truly loved spending time at the Four Queens in Las Vegas. Connie and Wayne were the centers of an amazing family dynamic. They created amazing family traditions including grand Christmas celebrations complete with hoe-downs in their garage, Easter Egg hunts on the farm and summer bonfires. The family also loved their annual camping trips to the Black Hills as well as their brilliant Fourth of July celebrations on the farm. They shared their love of travel with their family by taking the entire family; including daughters, grandchildren, and their great-grandchildren on a family trip to Branson, Missouri to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary.

Connie and Wayne also had a special love for dancing! Their membership with the Corn Palace Polka Club and Ballroom Swingers took them to festivals and dances all over the countryside. Connie was also an active member of the Red Hat Society.

Connie is survived by her two daughters, Judy (William) Andersen of Austin, TX, Peggy (Tom) Pearson of Mitchell, five grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Beverly Rowley of Mitchell, and many nieces and nephews.
