June 24, 1931 - November 10, 2019

Victoria Margaret (Meyer) Madigan, 88, of Mitchell, passed away November 10, 2019 at Prince of Peace Retirement Community in Sioux Falls.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Friday, November 15, 2019, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 PM Thursday, at Bittner Funeral Chapel, with a 6:30 PM Scripture Service with a Rosary.

Victoria Margaret (Meyer) Madigan was born in Lucas, SD on June 24, 1931. She grew up in Mitchell, SD as the youngest and only daughter of seven children.

As a teenager, she endured the loss of three of her brothers in World War II. This and her deep faith in Roman Catholicism helped shape her worldview and her compassion for others, especially her family.

She attended Notre Dame High School in Mitchell, SD, graduating in 1949. She studied Social Science at St. Benedict College at St. Joseph, MN in 1949. Later the same year, she returned to Mitchell to become a Registered Nurse after graduating from Presentation School of Nursing.

It was in Mitchell she met her future husband, John Edward Madigan. They were married on October 12, 1953 at Holy Family Church in Mitchell. The date was also John’s birthday and the 38th wedding anniversary of her parents.

The couple settled with their family at Pierre, SD in 1963, where they stayed until 1994. In Pierre, Victoria became very involved in raising her six sons, where they all graduated from T.F. Riggs High School. She was involved in various community activities like tutoring elementary school children. She was especially involved at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church where she taught catechism for many years to various grades.

In 1994, Victoria and her husband moved to Mitchell, SD. She became a care provider to her husband for several years after he became ill. He passed away in 1999.

Staying in Mitchell, she continued to be involved in the community she grew up in and attended daily mass at either Holy Spirit or Holy Family Catholic churches, volunteering at both with different activities.

Her home in Mitchell was always open to her growing, extended family, where she always dispensed her nurturing character and willingness to provide for others.

She moved to Prince of Peace Retirement Community at Sioux Falls in 2015.

She is survived by six sons: Thomas, James, Michael, Patrick, John and Brian; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers; one daughter: Maureen Ruth in 1960 and two grandchildren: Cathleen Rose Madigan in 1992 and Ted “Teddy” Madigan in 2003.

We pray for the repose of the soul of a wonderful and devoted Catholic mother. We have had the pleasure and honor of meeting and spending time with her six sons, especially James. They are a wonderful and lasting tribute to her motherhood, generosity, and piety.
