Duane Francis Haiar

Duane Francis Haiar, 80, Mitchell, SD died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, November 17, 2019 at Avera Queen of Peace.

The funeral mass service will be at 10:30 am Thursday, November 21, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell. The burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.  Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-7:00 pm with a scripture service at 7:00 pm at Holy Spirit Catholic Church.  Arrangements are with the Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell.

Duane Francis Haiar was born October 8, 1939 at home near Farmer, SD to Leo and Mary (Willett) Haiar. He attended Farmer school until 8th grade, worked the family farm until he was 17, at which time Leo drove him to Mitchell to work for United Building Center (UBC).  On October 25, 1960 he married Jean Kunkel at the Epiphany Catholic Church.  They made their home in Mitchell. Duane had a gift for math including fractions, angles and understanding roof pitches with a scrutinizing eye.  He worked for UBC (38 years) and later at Puetz Construction (12 years) as a quality control manager.  He was a talented carpenter who built things to last.  He was a great provider for his family and his work ethic has been passed on to future generations.  Duane was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks as well as the Knights of Columbus.  He loved to hunt, fish and play cards (loudly).   

Duane is survived by four children: Tom (Cindy) Haiar, Sioux Falls, Tim (Carla) Haiar, Sioux Falls, Mary (Scott) Callies, Mitchell and James (Kim) Haiar, Sioux Falls, 12  grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren.  The family is grateful to Chuckie Mayer for the companionship she shared with Duane.  He is survived by nine brothers and sisters: Don (Connie) Haiar, Hudson, CO, LeRoy (Betty) Haiar, Spearfish, Richard Haiar, Wilson, MI, Diane (Elton) Stoebner, Tripp, Mike (Mary Beth) Haiar Sioux Falls, Elaine (Tom) Fox, Sioux Falls, Lyle (Marilyn) Haiar, Corsica, Lynn (Diane) Haiar, Alexandria and Janine (Leland) VanEmmerick, Salem and seven brother and sisters-in-law:  John (Marcella) Kunkel, Alexandria, Betty Sprague and friend Dan Nelson, Albert Lea, MN, Jim (Gloria) Kunkel, Epiphany, Linda (Ernest) Schabauer, Rapid City, Larry (Judy) Kunkel, Alexandria, Dennis (Cheryl) Kunkel, Mitchell and Joanne (Jim) Carter, Onida.  He was preceded in death by his wife Jean, parents, in-laws Mark and Avice Kunkel, and sister, Phyllis Haiar.

Saying good bye to you today Duane was so very very hard. Thank you for love you shared with mom and sweet things you did with and for her. Todd, Teresa and I could have never picked a better man for mom. She loved you so much Duane and we will never forget the unconditional love you and mom shared. Until we meet again sweet man. Sympathy to all of Duane's family. Enjoyed many good times with Duane and Jean especially the Farmer Dances when we were growing up. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Saying goodbye to friends is hard, saying goodbye to special friends is extra hard. How he kept from breaking his knuckles beating on the table when he would trump our aces is beyond me. Sure made him happy to do so. May Gods blessings be with all the family as you remember a very special dad.

I just loved to go to Jean and Duane's house in Mitchell to play cards when I was a kid, and they would be out to the farm several times throughout the year too. And camping...was always fun with them. God Bless you Duane! I hope you get some good cards in Heaven!!
