Mervela Clarine Hildebrandt, 77, of Mitchell, SD, died Wednesday, November 27, 2019, at Avera Brady Health and Rehab in Mitchell.

Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Wednesday, December 4, 2019 at Mitchell Wesleyan Church in Mitchell. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 PM Tuesday at Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell with a prayer service at 6:30 PM. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Mervela Clarine Hildebrandt was born on March 27, 1942 to Carl A. and Myrtle (Loberg) Lidel. She attended Chester Elementary School and graduated from General Beadle High School in 1960. She worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company for two years before attending Presentation College in Aberdeen. She transferred to McKennen Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1964. She worked at the Methodist Hospital in Mitchell for three years.

On December 12, 1964, she married Leslie M. Hildebrandt in Madison, SD. The couple lived in Mitchell, where Mervela worked at St. Joseph Hospital and Queen of Peace Hospital until she retired. She worked on the Board for Meals on Wheels, where she delivered many meals. She volunteered at the grade school in Math and Reading. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother.

She enjoyed spending time with her friends and family. Her grandchildren were the highlight of her life. She was a member of the Mitchell Wesleyan Church, where she led Bible Studies.

Mervela is survived by her sons, Greg (Lora) Hildebrandt and Brian (Christine) Hildebrandt, both of Mitchell; three grandchildren, Tristen, Jared, and Jamison; brother, Carl John, of Vero Beach, FL; two sisters-in-law, Donna Lidel, Madison, and Karen Lidel, Sioux Falls.

She was preceded in death by her Husband, Leslie, two brothers, Merlin and Alan Lidel.

In the hope of helping others, Mervela donated her body for medical research to the Sanford School of Medicine at the University of South Dakota.  Inurnment at Sunset Memorial in Mitchell will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.

It was our privilege and pleasure to know Mervella for many years. Her quiet disposition was one of her dominant features. She was quite often quite selfless and interested in others over herself. Even during the years of her illness, she continued to quietly serve her Lord and her family. She was a special lady. Our prayers go out to Greg/Brian Hildebrandt families.

I have fond memories of working with your Mom at St. Joseph Hospital. I was a newbie in the lab & Mervela was good & kind. Didn’t realize she was your Mom, Brian. You have our sympathies. May she Rest In Peace.
