Obituary

Duane V. Strand, 89, of Mitchell, SD, died Saturday, November 21, 2020, of natural causes at Avera Specialty Hospital in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Friday, June 4, 2021 at First Lutheran Church in Mitchell. Lunch will be served at the church following the service. A graveside service with military honors will be at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Duane Velmer Strand was born May 10, 1931, at the family farm home of Carl and Sadie Strand (Heidner). He was baptized May 31, 1931, in First Lutheran Church by Pastor Alfred Storvick.

He attended Lisbon #8 rural school through 8th grade followed by one year at Wessington Springs Academy in 1945. While attending school there he tended the Shakespeare Garden. When his brother Julius completed 8th grade they both attended Mitchell Senior High School with Duane graduating in 1949. He attended one year at Marion College, Marion Indiana. While in high school he studied radio electronics which eventually led to a position of maintaining a fixed radio station in Berlin, Germany for the Armed Forces American Civilians and Military.

He was inducted into the Army, April 1953 with basic training at Camp Gordon, Augusta, Georgia, and Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. After an honorable discharge from the Army in 1955, he returned to Mitchell to farm and married Janis Hildebrandt, November 25, 1955.

To this union, five children were born: Quentin, Mark, Susan, Jonathan, and Timothy. He was named Outstanding Young Farmer in 1966 raising corn, wheat, cattle, and sheep. He remained on the farm which his grandfather Knudt Strand had originated in 1905 until the time of his death.

He married Kandee Greenfield, May 24, 1979, at the Chapel of the Hills, Rapid City, SD.  A daughter Kari was born in 1981. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Mitchell, singing in the choir for many years. Music was a favorite interest whether listening in the tractor or attending the South Dakota Symphony. He was a member of the Mitchell Concert Series and served on its board of directors.

He is survived by his wife Kandee, his children Quentin (Sherrie) Gillette, Wyoming, Mark (Patricia) Alliance, Nebraska, Susan Walia (Shami Walia), Falls Church, Virginia, Jonathan (Jill) Minneapolis, Minnesota, Timothy (Sharee) Marion, Indiana and Kari Strand (Lyndon Bolt) Rapid City, SD. Grandchildren Evie Riedmann, Eric, Evan and Ethan Strand, Selah Strand, Kelsie George, Caleb, Jared and Seth Strand, Marissa, Tristan, and Briana Walia, Macallan and Stella Bolt, and great-grandchildren Hallie and Jude Strand. Brothers Edward (Lois) Strand, Mitchell SD, Pastor Julius K (Bobbie Jean) Strand, Plymouth, MN, sister Leona (Don) Stehly, Mitchell SD, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Margaret Shonley, his brother-in-law Ivan Shonley, his in-laws Rosetta and LaVern Hildebrandt and Marion and Martha Greenfield.

Great memories of Uncle Duane! So happy we were able to see him in August for Mom and Dad's 70th Anniversary outdoor COVID celebration. He will be missed! May our Lord and Savior grant you peace and comfort. Our love and prayers are with you all!
