Wallace was born February 28, 1930 to Peter and Kathryn (Kieffer) Mohnen of White Lake, SD.  He attended school in White Lake for his first two years, then went to the Gillen School through eighth grade.  After the eighth grade, he helped his father on the farm.  In 1952 he was drafted into the service where he spent seven months.  He was then called home to take over the family farm because of his father’s illness.

In 1952 he married Lucille Fuerst of Mitchell, SD.  His parents moved to town in 1953 and Wallace managed the homestead farm where they lived until 1968 and nine children were born.  The family then moved to the Kieffer homestead where Wallace’s mother was raised. Here there were three more children born.  Wallace and Lucille enjoyed farming and raising their twelve children. In March of 2020 they moved to town, where he lived until the time of his passing.

Wallace was a member of Saint Peter’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Elk’s Lodge, Moose Lodge, and a lifetime member of the White Lake Sportsmans’ Club.  Wallace farmed his entire life and his passion was raising cattle.  He was very proud of his 125 year Homestead Award.  Wallace enjoyed camping, fishing, dancing, and socializing with friends.   Most of all, Wallace was happiest when he was surrounded by his wife Lucille, his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren at their many family gatherings.

Grateful for having shared in Wallace’s life are his wife, Lucille for over 68 years; twelve children:  Greg (Linda) Mohnen, Bend, OR; Christy (Phil) Schaefer, Sioux Falls, SD; Steve (Kathy) Mohnen, White Lake, SD; Renee (Rick) Lukkes, Waseca, MN; Carol Mohnen, Denver, CO; Dale Mohnen, White Lake, SD; Linda (Lenny) Kristensen, White Lake, SD; Mary (Ernie) LaFleur, Jefferson, SD; Robert (Shanna) Mohnen, White Lake, SD; Michelle (Joe) Koch, Stickney, SD; and Scott (Tonya) Mohnen, Crooks, SD; 27 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sandra; two infant sons, Michael and Duane; daughter-in-law, Brenda Mohnen; his parents; three sisters, Eileen (Luvern) Greenwell, Petronella (Alfred) Hettinger, Norma Jean (Alfred) Hanten; and an infant brother, Ivan.

Had the pleasure of getting to know Wallace & Lucille, and much of the family, in first coming out to pheasant hunt at their son-in-laws place - Tim and Mary (Mohnen) at the time. Our acquaintance with them was almost 40 years. They were always cordial, receiving of us (several times out at their farm when we came to visit) and quick with a smile. Our deepest sympathies go out to the entire Mohnen family and extended families (there’s a lot of them). They will surely be missed. God Bless and RIP.

We send our condolences to Lucille & family & friends.

Wally was a loving husband & father and liked to farm his land. Wally was a good friend who loved to fish for walleye on the Missouri River at Chamberlain with us. He was quite enjoyable to spend time with. He was also a good catholic, we saw him & Lucille in church often at Chamberlain.

May all the Memories of life with Wally bring you Peace & Comfort all these days. We send our thoughts and prayers to the family during these difficult days.
