LaVonne Hoefs was born on January 25th, 1931 in Wentworth, SD to Frank and Clara (Unzelman) Blase. She was the 6th of 8 children. She and her family later moved to a farm north of Madison, S.D. and graduated from General Beadle High School (Madison, SD) in 1948. Following graduation, she attended Nettleton College in Sioux Falls, SD. Shortly after graduating from Nettleton, LaVonne met DeWayne Hoefs at a local diner. When the bill came, LaVonne found she did not have enough to cover her tab. DeWayne chuckled and asked her on a date. The couple were married on June 15th, 1952 in Madison, SD.

DeWayne and LaVonne lived in Sioux Falls, SD where they were blessed with two children (Gregory and Vicki). LaVonne worked at the Argus Leader for 20 years, and upon retirement she moved to Mitchell to be closer to her daughter (Vicki). In retirement, she worked at McDonalds for nearly 15 years and enjoyed working over the lunch hour. LaVonne was also an avid gardener and thoroughly enjoyed the time she spent in her yard cultivating her flowers. She was even awarded “Yard of the Month” at one point. She appreciated simple beauty and found that in her backyard. She was also an avid golfer and bowler as well as a charter member at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Mitchell where she was an active participant in the Mary Circle.

She is survived by her loving and dedicated daughter Vicki Hansen (Hoefs) and her son-in-law Pastor John Hansen (Mitchell, SD). She is also survived by three grandchildren: Elissa (Ver Hey) and her husband Randy Keel (Goodyear, AZ), Jesse Ver Hey and his wife Cassey (Mitchell, SD), who have 2 children (Brooke and Cooper) and Kelsey Hansen who is a traveling nurse. She was blessed by the birth of her great-granddaughter Olivia LaVonne Keel in 2019 and thoroughly enjoyed watching her grow. Her sister Jean Whealy (Washington) and numerous nieces and nephews survive her as well.

After her passing, she was reunited with her husband, DeWayne; son, Gregory; her parents; and siblings, Woodrow, Bernice, Elden, Lois, Bud and Dean.

I have such fond memories of my Aunt Lavonne. She cared about family, including this nephew. She made a special trip to Madison to see me years back when I came to visit my grandma. I remember her talking about her work at McDonalds and how she loved it. Imagine being her customer...what a great experience! She will be missed by so many.
