Maynard Lee Ness was born to Ed and Vollie Ness in a Miner county farmhouse on March 3, 1926. He was the youngest of six children: Elmon, Millie, Grace (died as an infant), Evelyn, and Kenny. He attended Glee Lake School for elementary and Plano Consolidated High School. Maynard began dating Shirley Fillmore when his brother Kenny was dating her sister, Berthetta. They double-dated using the boys’ dually owned car. Maynard enlisted in the army in 1946 and served in Korea for 18 months. Maynard wrote to Shirley constantly while he was in Korea and they were married on October 10, 1948. Maynard was a farmer his whole life until he sold the family farm in 1999 and moved into Mitchell.
Maynard was a devoted husband and father. He was a man of faith who regularly attended church his whole life, first at Beulah Church of the Nazarene, then later at Harvest Community Church of the Nazarene, where he served as a greeter and usher for nearly 20 years. Maynard will be greatly missed by his family and many friends, including the residents and staff at Edgewood Assisted Living where he spent his final three years.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Shirley; three of his four children: Dave (Joy) Ness, Bill (Helen) Ness, Julie (Dave) Jamison; and son-in-law, Joe (Kathy) Buxie. Maynard also leaves behind nine grandchildren: Debbie (Mike) Jasiczek, Danny (Megan) Buxie, Heidi, Caleb, Ethan, Brian, and Glenn Ness, Rebekah and Steven Jamison; two great-grandchildren, Reagan and Ellie Buxie; as well as his sister, Evelyn Thomsen and sister-in-law, Berthetta Ness both of Mitchell.
